Best Surf Season (May - November)

The heart of the wet season delivers the perfect recipe for Playa Serena. As the Intertropical Convergence Zone shifts north, persistent low-pressure systems in the Southern Hemisphere fire up a near-constant stream of south-to-southwest groundswell. Over 90% of the swell energy arrives from the optimal SSW-to-WSW window, wrapping beautifully into the SSE-facing beach. Meanwhile, the North Pacific high still pumps enough northerly wind to keep conditions offshore a majority of the time – especially from July through August when ideal offshore winds blow over 70% of the month. Wave periods average 10-13 seconds, offering punchy, rideable surf in the 0.5-1.5m range, with occasional bigger pulses. This is the sweet spot for consistent, well-ordered waves.

Fair Surf Season (December - April)

The dry season brings a shift in the meteorological engine. Stronger North Pacific trade winds dominate, blowing consistently from the north and northwest – perfect offshore flow for Playa Serena. However, these same winds generate a significant amount of north and northwest swell (often 30-50% of the total) that hits the coast from a less favorable angle for the SSE-facing beach. While still surfable, these north pulses can be choppier and less organized. The bright side: the wind is nearly always clean, and average wave periods often push into the 11-13 second range, so when the occasional SSW swell sneaks in, the quality is excellent. Expect smaller average heights (0.6-0.7m) and a need to pick your days for the best direction.

Low Surf Season (February)

February stands out as the trickiest month of the year. Ideal offshore wind drops to just 39%, the lowest of any month, due to occasional incursions of southerly breeze. Swell direction is split almost evenly between suboptimal north energy (nearly 40% from NNW-N) and the optimal southwest quadrants. The average wave period, while still decent at 10.4s, can’t compensate for the inconsistency. Surfers will find fewer clean, organized waves, making it the month to be most selective about sessions.

December: Dry Season Arrives

December marks the official start of the dry season, and the wind machine spins up: ideal wind 72%, with a massive 73.4% coming from N and NNW combined. The offshore flow is near-permanent, providing clean conditions day after day. Swell direction shifts back to a more mixed status: optimal SSW-to-WSW makes up 63% of the total, but north swell from NNW (10.1%) and NW (6.3%) reasserts itself. Average period drops to 9.0 seconds – the shortest of the year – meaning shorter-interval windswell mixes in. Wave heights remain small (0.5-1m typical). This month delivers reliable, smooth waves but often lacking in power; the trade wind swell creates playful waves ideal for longboards and funshapes.
