Best Surf Season (December - February)

The heart of winter brings a surge of long-period NW groundswell from distant North Pacific storms, mixing with more consistent NNE/NE trade wind swell. While the dominant swell trains often arrive from the north-east, the windows of pure W to NNW swell – when they align with offshore easterly breezes – produce the most powerful and rippable conditions. December through February see average wave heights hover around 1.3m with periods averaging 12 seconds, but those precious days with a solid 10-14s NW pulse can transform the sandbars into punchy, hollow lefts and rights. The wind is offshore (from E to SSE) around 60-74% of the time, though the strong NE trades can create bumpy conditions. This is the prime window for experienced surfers to chase the higher-quality, longer-period swell at Playa Tamarindo.

Fair Surf Season (March, April, November)

These transitional months offer a mixed bag. March and April see the north swell quickly fade as the Intertropical Convergence Zone shifts northward, while November marks its return. You'll still find fun-sized surf (average 1.3-1.4m) with periods often exceeding 13 seconds, but the wave direction is increasingly dominated by SSW and SW – not ideal for Tamarindo's WNW exposure. However, when the occasional NW wrap sneaks in (rarely in spring, more likely in late November), and the typical offshore easterly winds prevail (67-72% ideal), the surf can be clean and playful. These months are good for steady, manageable waves, but expect smaller, less consistent quality compared to the peak winter season.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

From May through October, Playa Tamarindo is squarely in the grip of the southern swell window. Over 90% of the incoming swell is from the SSW and SW, generated by distant Southern Ocean storms. Due to the spot's WNW orientation, these long-period (13-14s), 1.4m average swells arrive at a severe angle, producing weak, crumbly waves or clean closeouts over the sandbars. While the offshore easterly trade winds are consistent and strong (ideal wind conditions 59-81% of the time), the swell simply lacks the proper direction to deliver quality surf. Occasional pulses from WSW can offer small, groveling waves, but overall this is the least reliable period. Surfers looking for decent waves should focus on the few days when small NW energy intrudes, typically during tropical cyclone activity, though such events are rare. Patience is key; the water is warm, but the surf is flat.

January: Peak North Swell Potential

January sees an average swell height of 1.3m with a period of 11.8s, and ideal surfing winds 61% of the time. The swell distribution reveals a solid mix: while NNE (16.9%) and NE (20.4%) directions dominate, there's a notable presence of NW to NNW swell (total 6.8%) and some W (3.2%) – these are the gold you want. The wind is overwhelmingly from the NE (47%) and ENE (39.5%), which is cross-shore to slightly onshore for Tamarindo. But when the wind clocks around to the east or southeast (offshore), it can groom those NW pulses into clean, shoulder-high waves. Long-period energy (10-14s) is common, making for powerful, punchy rides. Keep an eye on the forecast for NW groundswell with a light E wind – that's the magic combo.
