Best Surf Season (May - August)

Winter roars to life along the Garden Route, and Plettenberg Bay sees its most consistent swell window from May through August. During these months, the Southern Ocean cranks up its storm machine, sending long-period groundswells from the SSW and SW that wrap beautifully into the bay. Average swell heights hover around 2.5m with periods pushing 12.5s, delivering powerful, clean lines. The wind climatology shifts favorably during this period, with offshore flow from the W and WNW becoming dominant, blowing glassy over the east-facing breaks. This is the prime time to score pumping, firing waves – especially when a strong high-pressure system sets up over the interior, locking in light offshore breezes for days on end.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

Spring and fall are transitional seasons where consistency drops but quality can still shine. March and April see average wave heights around 2.1-2.2m and periods of 11.5-11.8s, with a mix of south and southwest swells. The wind regime begins to shift – offshore flow is still frequent but gets interrupted by more easterly onshore pulses. September and October are similar, with average heights of 2.3-2.4m and periods of 11.1-11.8s, though onshore winds from the E and ESE become more common. These months offer solid shoulder-season surf, often with lighter crowds, but you'll need to pick your windows carefully.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer brings a lull in swell energy to Plettenberg Bay. From November through February, average wave heights drop to around 2.0m and periods shorten to 10.9-11.1s. The dominant swell direction remains from the SSW and SW, but the energy is less consistent and often smaller. The real issue is wind: onshore flow from the E, ESE, and SE becomes persistent, with easterlies blowing over 40% of the time in December and January. This messes up the wave face, creating choppy, lumpy conditions. Offshore windows from the WSW and W do occur, but they are less frequent. If you catch a day with a proper cold front passage and a clean westerly wind, you can find fun, rippable waves, but overall, this is the low season for quality surf.

January: Summer Lull and Easterly Winds

January is deep summer in South Africa, and Plettenberg Bay feels the heat in the surf department. The average swell height settles at 2.0m with a period of 10.9s, providing mostly average, punchy waves. The dominant swell directions are from the SSW (31.6%) and SW (20.6%), which wrap into the bay but lack the size and period of winter. Optimal swell from the ESE, SE, and SSE is minimal – only 9.3% from SSE is notable. The real problem is wind: easterly and east-southeasterly flow combines for over 27% of the time, blowing directly onshore and ruining wave quality. Offshore winds from the WSW and W occur 23.6% of the time, offering occasional clean windows, but they are often light. When a cold front pushes through with a fresh W wind, you can find fun, rippable 1-1.5m waves, but consistent quality is hard to come by.
