Best Surf Season (October - March)

The heart of the North Atlantic winter delivers the goods at Ponta do Pargo, with average swell heights consistently above 2m and periods regularly hitting the 11-13s range. This is prime time for powerful groundswell generated by deep extratropical lows tracking across the Atlantic. The west-facing orientation captures the dominant WNW-to-NW swell, producing clean, lined-up waves when the wind plays ball. Offshore conditions from the ONO and O directions are most common during these months, especially during high-pressure ridges. While storm tracks can bring onshore W and NW winds, the window for epic surf is wide open. Expect pumping, heavy waves in the 1.5-2.5m range, with frequent XL days exceeding 2.5m. The NAO index plays a key role – a positive phase funnels stronger lows into the northeast Atlantic, while a negative phase can block systems, but either way, winter ensures consistent, sizable surf.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Transition months April and September offer a blend of moderate swell and improving wind statistics. Average heights hover around 2m in April and 1.6m in September, with periods in the 10-11s range – rideable but lacking the punch of winter. The dominant swell shifts slightly northward, with NNW and NW still the main contributors, but the arrival of weaker secondary fetches reduces consistency. Wind quality improves notably in September (46% ideal), with the trade wind regime weakening and more frequent offshore E/ENE breezes. April sees a sharp drop in ideal wind to 32%, as spring storms stir up onshore components. These months are best for smaller, fun-sized waves (1-1.5m) when clean, but expect mixed conditions overall. They serve as a buffer between the main seasons.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer brings a dramatic drop in wave energy to Ponta do Pargo. Average swell heights fall to 1.4-1.7m and periods drop below 10s, often in the 8-9s range, producing weak, short-period chop. The dominant swell direction switches to pure north, with over 70% of energy from N, NNE, and NNW – none of which favor this west-facing spot. The combination creates small, crumbly waves that are rarely rideable. Wind regimes are dominated by the persistent NE trade winds, which blow side-onshore at this orientation, further degrading quality. Ideal wind percentages range from 29% in May to 43% in August, but even with offshore shifts, the lack of swell size and period means surf is limited to tiny, grovelly conditions. The odd distant storm can sneak through, but mostly summer is a hiatus for surfers. Firing conditions are extremely rare, with the few 1-1.5m sets only offering short-lived fun.

September: Autumn Revival

September marks the start of the surf season's comeback. Average swell height rises to 1.6m and period jumps to 10.5s – a noticeable improvement. Swell from the NW begins to appear more frequently: NNW (40.4%), NW (16.7%), and N (13.8%). These directions start to wrap better, producing longer-period waves. Wind quality hits the yearly peak at 46% ideal, thanks to increasing pressure from the Azores High pushing light offshore ENE and E winds (combined 4.6%). The trade wind regime is still present but weakened, with NNE (28.7%) and NE (20.3%) dominating. The combination of longer period and occasional NW swell means the first real groundswells of the season arrive. Wave height distribution shows a shift: more 1-1.5m (40.2%) and 1.5-2m (33.6%), with some 2-2.5m (14.6%). When a tropical system spins off West Africa, it can inject extra energy. September offers the best balance of quality and consistency in the early fall.
