Best Surf Season (May - August)

The heart of the South African winter delivers the most consistent combination of powerful, long-period swell and favourable offshore winds to Port Alfred. As the polar front intensifies, a steady stream of extratropical cyclones churns through the Roaring Forties, generating long-period groundswell from the SSW and S quadrants. These swells wrap beautifully into the SE-facing break, with average wave heights peaking at 1.9–2.0m and periods stretching to 12 seconds. Meanwhile, the prevalence of high pressure systems over the interior promotes light to moderate NW to NNW winds, grooming the surfaces into glassy, well-stacked lines. Ideal wind frequency tops 50% from May through July, making this the prime window for rifling tubes and rippable walls.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

As the seasons transition, April and September offer a blend of winter and summer patterns. The swell window remains active, with average heights still around 1.8–2.0m and periods of 11 seconds, thanks to lingering frontal activity. However, the wind consistency begins to shift. In April, offshore wind frequency drops to 39%, while September sees a decline to 35%. Dominant flows oscillate between early-morning WNW or NW cleanups and afternoon ENE seabreezes that can chop up the surface. Smart timing is key – dawn patrols often yield the best conditions.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

Summer in the Eastern Cape is dominated by a semi-permanent Indian Ocean high pressure cell that drives persistent ENE to E winds. These winds, blowing from an onshore direction for the SE-facing beach, ruin wave quality for the majority of the time. Ideal wind frequency plummets to 20–27%. Swell heights average a modest 1.7–1.8m with periods around 10 seconds, and the energy is largely short-period windswell mixed with occasional S-SSW groundswell. While the odd frontal passage can bring a clean pulse, the overall character is junky, textured surf. The south-facing spots along the coast often fare better during these months, but Port Alfred is best considered a fair-weather option.

December: Summer Full-On – Tough Conditions

December rounds out the year with the worst wind consistency – only 21% ideal. ENE winds blow 19.8% of the time, often at 10–30 kph, pulverizing any wave quality. Swell height averages 1.7m, period 10.2s, but the mix is overwhelmingly short-period windswell from the E and ESE (combined 20.5%) plus longer-period SSW groundswell (29%) that almost always arrives with onshore wind. The few golden days occur when a weak cold front slips through, flipping winds to NW or WNW for a few hours. If you find yourself in Port Alfred during December, dawn patrol is the only viable option – and even then, hope for a miracle.
