The North Atlantic delivers its full fury and consistency during these months, with average swell heights ranging from 2.1m in October to 2.8m in January and periods often exceeding 12 seconds. This is the prime window for Porto Batel. Powerful extratropical storms track across the Atlantic, generating long-period NW to W swells that wrap perfectly into the bay. With offshore winds from the east quadrant (NNE through E) blowing 40-44% of the time, conditions are frequently clean and glassy. Expect pumping, heavy waves in the 1.5-2.5m range, with occasional XL days above 2.5m. This is when the big-wave crew charge the outer reefs and the lineup sees its best shape.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transitional months offer a mix of fading winter swell and building summer patterns. April still sees average swell heights of 2.1m with 11.2s periods, but the frequency of offshore winds drops to 34%. Swell direction shifts more toward the NW quadrant, still providing decent waves but with less consistency. September marks the return of autumn energy; swell heights average 1.7m but periods tick up to 10.5s, and offshore wind percentages climb back to 40%. The crowds thin out and you can often score good, rippable waves without the peak-season chaos.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer brings the smallest swells of the year, with average heights hovering around 1.5-1.8m and periods dropping below 10 seconds. The dominant swell direction becomes almost exclusively from the NW to N quadrants, producing weaker, shorter-period waves that often lack power. Offshore wind percentages dip to 25-31%, meaning onshore wind from the SW/W quadrant is frequent, ruining the surface. However, there are still fun, mellow days, especially when a weak low-pressure system generates a pulse of W swell. This is the time for groveling on logs or longboards, but serious surfers may look elsewhere.

November: Winter Preview

November brings a notable step up in swell energy. Averages: 2.5m height, 12.1s period, 42% ideal wind. The swell direction is dominated by NW (20.6%), NNW (15.9%), and WNW (13.5%), but we see a healthy contribution from W (5.4%) and even SW (1.1%) — both optimal for the spot. These more westerly swells, combined with the long period, produce the most powerful waves of the season so far. Offshore wind from N (15.0%) and NNE (9.8%) remains consistent. Expect firing surf on the better days, with XL swells possible. This is a month when the big-wave crew starts charging.
