Best Surf Season (November - March)

The heart of the North Atlantic storm track delivers consistent, powerful swell to Porto Covo from late autumn through early spring. Average wave heights hover around 2.0-2.4m with long periods often exceeding 12 seconds, thanks to deep low-pressure systems spinning up off the coast of Greenland and Newfoundland. Offshore winds from the east quadrant (ENE through SE) become more frequent, particularly during high-pressure ridging over continental Europe, setting up clean, glassy conditions. This is prime time for Porto Covo's west-facing beaches to come alive with hollow sandbar peaks and open ocean walls.

Fair Surf Season (October & April)

The transition months see a blend of leftover summer windswell and building winter groundswell. October often benefits from early-season storms, while April retains some winter energy as the storm track begins to lift northward. Average heights dip slightly to 1.8-2.1m and periods range 11-12s. The wind becomes more fickle, but windows of clean easterly offshore flow still occur frequently enough to score fun, rippable waves.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

Summer brings a dramatic shift as the Azores High settles over the North Atlantic, deflecting storms north of Portugal. Porto Covo relies on weak, short-period NW windswell generated by local northerly and northwesterly winds. Average heights drop to 1.3-1.5m and periods shorten to 8-10s. Worse still, the dominant wind direction shifts to northerly and northwesterly – directly onshore for this west-facing coast – leaving the surf mostly blown out and choppy. Occasional pulses of southwesterly swell from distant storms can provide brief relief, but consistency suffers. This is the time to explore other continent's swell windows or just enjoy the beach vibe.

January: The Full Force of Winter

The North Atlantic is in full roar, with an average swell height of 2.4m and periods stretching to 13.1 seconds – that's powerful, long-period groundswell with plenty of muscle. The dominant swell directions are NW and WNW, accounting for nearly 48% of all observations, which wrap nicely into Porto Covo's west-facing beaches. These waves often settle in the 1.5-2.5m range (pumping to firing), with occasional XL sets over 2.5m for the chargers. The silver lining: ideal offshore wind conditions (east quadrant) occur 46% of the time, driven by cold continental high-pressure systems building over Iberia. When the wind aligns from ENE or E, the surf turns glassy, steep walled, and remarkably clean. However, be prepared for the odd storm front that swings onshore from the W or NW, turning the ocean into a choppy mess. Overall, January delivers some of the most consistent and world-class surf of the year at Porto Covo.
