However, an occasional late-season or early-season storm can pump in a quick burst of 1-1.5m swell with a workable period, rewarding those who keep a close eye on the charts.

January: Deep-Winter Potential

January sits at the heart of the Mediterranean storm season, delivering the largest average swell of the year (1.0m) with a 5.5s period. While the dominant swell direction is from the NW (22.1%), which wraps into the cove with limited quality, a healthy 23% of the wave energy arrives from the favorable S, SSW, and SW quadrants. These south-westerly swells, often generated by low-pressure systems tracking across the Tyrrhenian Sea, bring the best 1-1.5m fun-sized waves right into the pocket. The wind regime is driven by the Siberian High, producing offshore N, NNE, NE, and NNW winds 20% of the time – the highest percentage of the year. When these northerly winds coincide with a south-westerly swell, Porto Katsiki cleans up beautifully, offering punchy, rippable walls.
