Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during these months, with average swell heights consistently above 2.4m and periods averaging 11-12.6s. Powerful extratropical cyclones track across the North Atlantic, feeding long-period swell from the W to NW quadrants. Ideal wind percentages hover around 40-48%, with frequent spells of light offshore flow from the W-WSW sector. This is the prime window for world-class waves at Praia Azul, when a combination of solid swell and clean sideshore or slightly offshore winds produces firing conditions.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September represent the transitional shoulders. April still sees a healthy average height of 2.1m and a respectable 10.9s period, but ideal wind drops to 30%. The swell mix shifts slightly – more NW and NNW energy while the wind regime becomes more variable. September offers a bounce-back from summer doldrums, with average height climbing to 1.6m, period to 10.4s, and ideal wind up to 29%. Early-season storms begin to organize, delivering punchy, rippable waves with occasional longer-period groundswell.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer relaxation sets in from May through August. Average heights drop to 1.4-1.7m, periods shorten to 8.6-9.8s, and ideal wind plummets to 13-23%. The dominant swell directions are NW and NNW, often associated with a persistent thermal low and strong north winds – both onshore and choppy. Waves remain small to fun-sized, with occasional pulse from distant storm tracks. This is a groveling period for high-performance surfing; expect smaller counts and a need for top-tier equipment choices.

January: Peak Winter Power

The North Atlantic is in full fury, delivering an average swell height of 2.7m with a very long period of 12.6s. The dominant swell directions are WNW (19.1%) and NW (14.3%), with a significant chunk of W energy (6.4%). This squarely hits the west-facing beach, producing powerful, heavy sets that range from solid 1.5-2m into the over-2.5m XL category. Ideal wind occurs 48% of the time, predominantly from the W and SW quadrants (WSW 3.4%, W 3.3%, SW 5.0%) – these light offshore flows groom the wave faces. When a deep low parks itself west of Portugal, you get the best combination: long-period groundswell and clear, light winds. But watch for strong N winds (8.9%) that can create onshore chop if the direction swerves northward.
