Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September serve as the transition windows between the main surf season and the less active periods. In April, the tail end of winter still delivers a decent southerly component (nearly 10% from S), and the average period holds at 9.0 seconds. The percentage of favorable offshore wind remains relatively high (54% ideal in April, 56% in May). September, on the other hand, marks the beginning of spring, with the South Atlantic high pressure starting to strengthen. You'll still see a respectable average swell height of 1.5m in September, but the direction shifts more easterly (E/ENE dominate) and the ideal wind percentages drop to 39%. This means fewer flawless sessions, but when a cold front lingers or a late-season storm spins up, you can still score fun, solid waves. Expect more variability in quality, with some days of clean, shoulder-high surf interspersed with choppy, wind-affected conditions. April is the more reliable of the two, while September offers larger swells but requires more patience for a clean window.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

During the Southern Hemisphere summer and early fall, from October through March, Praia da Vila experiences its weakest surf conditions. The dominant swell shifts almost entirely to the east and northeast quadrants (E, ENE, ESE), which are not optimal for this southeast-facing beach. These short-period, 6-9 second waves tend to be less powerful and produce a smaller, more inconsistent wave. The southerly component drops to single digits, and the average wave period often sits below 8.5 seconds. Additionally, the ideal offshore wind regime (N, NW, WNW, NNW) becomes scarce, with percentages ranging from only 37% to 49%. Instead, the wind frequently blows from the north-northeast, which can create bumpy, onshore texture, especially when speeds push above 10-15 kph. The average swell height hovers around 1.2-1.3m, which is small to fun-sized at best. While you can still find rideable waves, especially on the lower tides and with a light morning breeze from the north, the overall quality and consistency take a significant drop. Occasional pulses from a migrating tropical low or a rare southern hemi cold front can briefly light things up, but these events are the exception, not the rule. If you're looking for dependable, quality surf, the low season is best avoided unless you're okay with smaller, more challenging conditions.

February: More of the Same, Slightly Brighter

February is very similar to January, with an average wave height of 1.2m and a period of 8.1 seconds. The swell continues to come from the east and southeast (E 23.5%, ENE 19.6%, ESE 24.5%, SE 18.3%), while the southerly component remains a meager 3.2%. The wind is ideal 49% of the time, a slight improvement, but the dominant wind is still from the NNE (21.3%) and NE (17.3%). The light north wind can keep the surface glassy in the early morning, but the short, weak wave period means the surf is barely rideable. On the rare occasions when a south swell coincides with a light north or northwest wind, the quality jumps, but these windows are fleeting and often get blown out quickly. The overall vibe is one of frustration—the potential for a decent wave exists, but the consistency is poor. If you're in the area, keep your expectations low and bring a groveler or a foil board to make the most of the small, bumpy conditions.
