Best Surf Season (December - March)

The heart of winter delivers the most consistent and quality surf to Praia de Monte Gordo. With average swell heights hovering around 0.8m to 0.9m and periods often pushing into the 7-8 second range, the North Atlantic's fury translates into punchy, rippable waves. The Azores High and Icelandic Low create a tight pressure gradient, firing deep low pressures toward the Iberian coast. This is when the predominant swell directions—especially from the SE, SSE, S, and SSW—align with the south-facing beach, producing clean lines. Offshore winds from the N to NNW quadrant blow steadily, keeping wave faces smooth. The best windows arrive with a negative NAO pattern, which shunts storms farther south. Expect fun 1-1.5m waves on the regular, with occasional pumping 1.5-2m sets when a strong low stalls off the coast.

Fair Surf Season (October, November, April)

Transition months offer a mixed bag. November still sees solid swell (0.8m average, 7.0s period) and a 37% offshore wind rate, but the pattern becomes less stable as high-pressure ridges temporarily block storms. October and April are more marginal: swell heights drop to 0.7m and periods shorten to 6.1-6.4s, with offshore wind frequencies in the 24-33% range. You'll find occasional fun sessions when a passing frontal system aligns with a brief pulse of N wind. These months are best for patient surfers willing to gamble on the weather windows. April can surprise with a late-season groundswell if the NAO swings negative, but overall expect average wave heights and a mix of clean and choppy days.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

Summer puts the brakes on quality surf at Monte Gordo. The Azores High expands, shifting storm tracks far to the north, and average swell heights plummet to 0.4-0.6m with periods of 4.4-5.8s—mostly weak, short-period windswell. The wind regime turns unfavorable: offshore N to NNW winds drop to just 13-26% frequency, while onshore sea breezes from the S and SW dominate. The few rideable days come from distant tropical systems or rare cut-off lows that send small SE pulses. Wave heights rarely exceed 0.5-1m and are often groveling. Unless you're a longboarder with low expectations, this is the time to travel north or wait for a freak summer swell. The surf is best early morning before the thermals kick up, but even then it's a struggle.

August: Rock Bottom

August continues the summer doldrums. Average swell height is 0.4m and period 4.7s—too small, micro. SE swell (13.8%) and W (20.3%) are the main sources, but heights are almost exclusively under 0.5m. Offshore wind frequency is the lowest of the year at just 13%, with NNW winds at 30.9% often staying light. Onshore winds from SW (7.6%) and SSW (7.6%) add to the frustration. The persistent Azores High blocks any real swell. Wave heights of 0.5-1m are rare, and even then the period is too short for decent rides. This is the month to take a break or explore Portugal's colder, exposed north coast.
