Best Surf Season (May - July)

The deep southern winter locks in over the South Atlantic, and Praia dos Molhes reaps the rewards. May through July is the sweet spot, with average swell heights sitting in the 1.6–1.7m range and periods stretching to 9.4–9.8 seconds – a solid combination of power and shape. More importantly, offshore winds from the west and southwest blow over 50% of the time, grooming the waves into clean, rippable lines. This is when the seasonal high-pressure systems dominate, setting up prolonged windows of light land breezes and consistent groundswell from the South Atlantic storm track.

Fair Surf Season (April & August - September)

April and August mark the transitions. In April, the swell picks up to 1.6m with a period of 9.1s, and offshore wind frequencies reach 41% – a promising blend, though still a bit rougher around the edges. August sees similar swell heights (1.7m) but a dip in offshore consistency to 42%, while September brings the biggest average swell of the year at 1.8m, but ideal wind plummets to only 28%. You'll find more windy, mixed-up days, but the occasional clean, powerful swell sneaks through, especially when a strong cold front pushes through and leaves behind crisp westerly winds.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

From October through March, the South Atlantic high-pressure ridge settles closer to the coast, generating persistent easterly to northeasterly winds that blow directly onshore at Praia dos Molhes. Ideal offshore wind percentages hover around 20–34%, and the average wave period drops to 8.2–8.6s, indicating shorter, less organized swell. Swell heights still average a respectable 1.4–1.7m, but the onshore flow chops up the surface and closes out many waves. It's not a total write-off – a southward shift of the wind or a distant storm can still deliver the goods – but consistency suffers, and you'll need to pick your windows carefully.

July: Still Firing, Slightly Mellowing

July holds the winter pattern but with a subtle shift. Swell height remains at 1.6m, and period dips a bit to 9.4s. The offshore wind percentage is still excellent at 50%, with the westerly quadrant contributing 29.8% of the wind. The swell direction shows a slight decrease in pure south swell and an increase in ENE (16.7%) and NE (2.7%) – a sign that the fetch is starting to rotate. This can introduce more easterly infill that mixes with the south groundswell, creating a more inconsistent but occasionally bigger combo swell. Early mornings with light westerly winds remain prime. The surf is still very good, but the peak has just passed.
