Best Surf Season (June - October)

Punta Burros truly comes alive during the summer and early fall when the North Pacific's storm track shifts north and the Southern Hemisphere's winter lows begin to pulse. This is when the SW and SSW swell windows open wide, delivering consistent, long-period groundswell that wraps perfectly into the south-facing beach. The average wave height sits around 1.0-1.1m with a powerful period of 13-14s, providing fun, rippable waves that occasionally fire into the 1.5-2m range. Offshore winds from the N to NNW still dominate over 65% of the time, keeping the surface glassy and clean. This is the sweet spot for quality surf at Punta Burros.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, November)

Shoulder months offer a mix of conditions. During April and May, the swell window transitions from winter west-northwest swells to more southerly energy, with SW and WSW swells sharing dominance. Wave heights remain in the fun 1-1.5m range, and periods stay long, but the consistency dips compared to summer. November sees a return of west swell mixing with the last of the SW pulses; winds are still favorable (80-92% offshore), but the swell direction is less ideal. Expect smaller days mixed with occasional solid SW groundswell – a good time for a flexible quiver.

Low Surf Season (December - March)

Winter at Punta Burros is dominated by large, long-period W to WNW swells generated by powerful North Pacific extratropical storms. While these swells can produce sizable waves (often 1-1.5m+ with occasional 2m sets), the direction is far from optimal for the south-facing beach. The waves arrive with a strong westerly component, resulting in weak, crumbly lines that rarely form clean, steep faces. Offshore wind statistics are excellent (over 85% from N to NNW), but the poor swell angle makes these months the most challenging for quality surf. Only when a rare SSW or SW swell sneaks in – usually from a cutoff low – can you find a hidden gem.

May: Prime Time Approaches

May sees the swell window tilt further south, with SW (43.3%) and WSW (46%) accounting for nearly 90% of all swell. The average height is 1.1m with a period of 14.0s – a potent combo. Waves are consistently in the fun to good range (1-1.5m), and the angle is ideal for the beach. Offshore wind percentages drop slightly to 81%, but the dominant directions (N, NW, NNW) still provide clean conditions most of the time. This is when Punta Burros starts to fire regularly. The only downside is an occasional SW wind (onshore) that can spoil a session, but those are rare. May is a solid month for quality surf.
