Best Surf Season (July - October)

The heart of the surf season at Punta Conejo unfolds from July through October. During these months, the percentage of swell approaching from the optimal western quadrants (SW to WNW) peaks, reaching nearly 9% in September. Meanwhile, the average wave period stretches into the 12- to 13-second range, delivering long-period, powerful lines that wrap beautifully onto the east-facing beach. The wind is also most cooperative, with ideal offshore breezes (from WSW to NW) occurring 38-42% of the time. This window offers the best balance of quality, consistency, and favorable conditions, especially when tropical systems or South Pacific storms send clean, mid-period swell.

Fair Surf Season (November - March)

From November through March, Punta Conejo experiences its largest average swell heights (1.6 to 1.8 meters), but the dominant directions shift dramatically to the north (NNW) and south (SSW). While these swells can generate size, they are less consistent in form for the east-facing setup, often producing a mix of lumpy, crumbly waves. The wave period drops into the 8- to 11-second range, making for punchier, sometimes sectiony conditions. Offshore wind opportunities remain modest at 34-38%, and the prevailing northerly winds often blow sideshore or onshore. Still, when a cold front pushes through and the wind clocks to the west, the quality can spike – you just have to be ready for it.

Low Surf Season (April - June)

April through June marks the low season for Punta Conejo. Average swell heights drop to around 1.4-1.5 meters, and the swell direction becomes heavily dominated by the south (SSW and S), with SSW alone contributing 55-64% of the total energy. While the wave period is long (12.8-13.6 seconds), suggesting deep-water power, the south-oriented swell often lacks the proper angle to wrap effectively into the east-facing pocket. The wind, though slightly more favorable (35-36% ideal), is still predominantly from the north and north-northeast, keeping the surf mostly small, clean, and fun-sized on the best days – great for logging or a grovel board, but not for firing barrels.

April: The Long Period Lull

April offers the longest average period of the year at 12.8 seconds, a sign of distant storm energy. However, the swell height holds steady at 1.5 meters, and the direction is overwhelmingly from the SSW (58.8%). Only 5.6% of the swell comes from the optimal west quadrant. The wind is not doing us any favors – ideal offshore flow is a mere 3.4% of the time, with south and north winds duking it out (S 29.5%, N 28.8%). The long period means deep water power, but the south-slanting swell often delivers inconsistent sets and weak lines. For the patient surfer who can pick the shift when the wind goes west, April offers glassy, long-running walls on the lower tides.
