Best Surf Season (October - December)

The Bay of Bengal comes alive during the late autumn and early winter months as the monsoon retreats and the trade winds relax. October through December deliver the most consistent combination of rideable swell and offshore winds at Puri. Long-period groundswell from the S and SSE directions rolls in with average heights in the 0.6-0.9m range, but the real gem is the wind: N, NNE, and NW breezes dominate, glassing off the face of the wave for a clean, rippable surface. November stands out with a solid 56% of ideal wind conditions, making it the prime month for scoring Puri at its finest. Expect punchy 10-11 second periods and fun-sized waves that peel nicely along the sandbars.

Fair Surf Season (January - February & September)

As winter progresses into early spring, the offshore wind window narrows but remains workable. January still sees a respectable 28% of clean wind days, though swell heights dip slightly to an average of 0.6m. February sees a drop in ideal wind to 14%, but the swell becomes more energetic with a greater percentage of 0.5-1m waves from the S and SSE – often with longer 10.5 second periods. September marks the transition out of the monsoon, with improving offshore wind trends (20% ideal) and a rising swell of 1.2m on average. The water is warm, and the sandbars are resetting, offering occasional fun sessions when the rare N wind aligns with a decent S pulse.

Low Surf Season (March - August)

The southwest monsoon dominates from March through August, bringing relentless onshore winds from the SSW and SW that turn the once-clean lines into a choppy, blown-out mess. Ideal wind percentages plummet to 2-12% during these months. While swell heights actually build into the 1.2-1.5m range from April to June, the quality is severely compromised. The combination of short-period (8-9s) swell and strong cross/onshore wind makes for messy, bumpy surf that is rarely worth paddling out. Occasional windows of lighter winds or a brief N wind after a storm can produce a few hours of fun, but these are few and far between. For the dedicated surfer, this is the time to travel elsewhere or enjoy other activities on the beach.

February: Building Swell, Fading Wind

February sees a noticeable uptick in swell energy compared to January, with the average height rising to 0.7m and a larger portion of waves in the 0.5-1m range. The dominant swell direction shifts even more toward due S (47.6%) and SSE (25%), providing excellent exposure for Puri's south-facing angle. Periods remain strong at 10.5s, giving the waves decent punch. Unfortunately, the window for offshore winds (N, NNE, NW) narrows to just 14%. The wind roses show a heavy increase in SSW (26%) and SW (16%) winds, which are directly onshore and ruin the wave shape. When a cold front slips down the coast and swings the wind to the N, it's game on – you'll find clean, fun-sized lines with some occasional head-high sets. But patience is key, as the onshore gunk is the default setting.
