Best Surf Season (October - March)

The heart of the North Atlantic winter delivers the goods at Razo from October through March. Powerful extratropical cyclones track across the Atlantic, generating consistent, long-period swell from the NW and WNW quadrants that fire straight into this NNW-facing beach. Average swell heights climb above 2.5m, often pushing into the pumping (1.5-2.5m) and massive (>2.5m) ranges, with average periods of 11-13s that produce powerful, well-structured waves. The frequency of offshore winds from the S, SSW, and SW peaks during these months, with ideal conditions occurring 25-31% of the time—the highest of the year. These are the months when Razo truly shines, offering world-class waves when the stars align.

Fair Surf Season (April - May, September)

As winter loosens its grip, the energy dials down but still provides plenty of rideable waves. April and May see average swell heights drop to 1.9-2.4m with shorter periods around 9.8-10.7s, producing fun to solid conditions. The offshore wind window remains active but narrows, with ideal conditions around 20-21% of the time. Meanwhile, September marks the onset of the autumn transition: the first strong storms of the season begin to stir the Atlantic, lifting average swell heights back to 1.9m and periods to 10.2s. Ideal wind odds climb to 25%, setting the stage for the approaching peak season.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quietest period at Razo. The Azores High dominates, suppressing storm activity and leaving the beach with predominantly small, weak swell. Average heights hover around 1.5-1.6m and periods dip to 8.5-9.0s, producing mostly small to fun-sized waves. Northerly and northeasterly winds prevail—often onshore or side-onshore—reducing the quality further. Ideal offshore wind conditions drop to just 15-18%. While there are still occasional rideable waves, especially with a morning S or SSW breeze, it is definitely the low season for dedicated surf sessions.

April: Transitional Swell & Shifting Winds

April sees the first noticeable downshift in winter energy. Average swell height falls to 2.4m and period drops to 10.7s, still producing solid to pumping waves on the best days. Swell directions shift slightly: WNW (14.4%), NW (12.9%), and NNW (11.5%) remain dominant, but the percentage of smaller waves increases. The offshore wind window tightens to 21% of the time, with SSW (10.0%) and SW (9.0%) still providing decent groom. However, NE (17.9%) and NNE (11.2%) winds are more frequent, often creating side-onshore texture. April is a month of opportunity—catch it when the wind is right and you’ll still score some excellent waves.
