Best Surf Season (April – September)

The southwest monsoon transforms the Maldives into a consistent, offshore-driven surf paradise. From April through September, the Indian Ocean’s deep tropical low-pressure systems generate a steady stream of SSE to SE swell that perfectly aligns with Riptides’ southeast-facing reef. Average wave heights fluctuate between 0.8m and 1.3m with periods climbing to 9–9.5s in the peak summer months, producing punchy, rippable waves. The trade winds shift to a dominant W to WNW flow, blowing cleanly offshore across the island 45–64% of the time. This window delivers the most reliable, groomed waves for all levels, with the best combo of size, period, and wind in July and August.

Fair Surf Season (May, June, October, November)

The transitional months see a mixed bag. In May and June, the monsoon is building, bringing more south to southwest swell – less ideal than SSE, but still rideable when the period is up. Offshore wind percentages drop to the low 40s, and the average height hovers around 1.1–1.2m. October and November mark the retreat of the monsoon, with a return of easterly swell from the equatorial trough. Wind patterns become more variable, with a higher chance of lighter onshore breezes from the east. These months can deliver fun, groveling waves on the right swell, but consistency drops off.

Low Surf Season (December – March)

The northeast monsoon dominates from December through March, driving persistent ENE to E windswell that arrives with short, weak periods (7.0–7.5s) and average heights around 1.0m. Although some swell reaches the break, the fetch is limited and the local NE to ENE winds blow directly onshore (18–30% offshore), chopping up the surface. Waves are often small and messy, with only the occasional longer-period pulse from distant storms in the North Pacific or Southern Ocean. This is the least consistent period; expect micro to fun-size conditions at best, with a premium on timing a clean, offshore window.

November: Return of East Swell

November marks the return of the northeast monsoon conditions. Swell directions become more easterly: SE (19.8%), SSE (17.2%), E (7.2%), and ESE (10.9%). The average height holds at 1.0m, period drops to 8.0s. Offshore wind is still decent at 49%, but the prevailing wind is less consistent, often swinging from the east to northeast, bringing onshore chop. The waves are smaller and less organized than the summer months, but on a good west wind day, the left‑handers from the SE can be fairly clean and rippable. Expect more groveling conditions with the occasional waist‑high gem.
