Best Surf Season (November – March)

Through the winter months, the Mediterranean stirs with a series of low-pressure systems pushing across the basin, delivering the most consistent and sizable swell to Ristorante's south-southwest-facing beach. Average wave heights hover between 0.8 m and 1.0 m, and while periods remain in the 5.0–5.2 s range – typical short-period, punchy Mediterranean windswell – the combination of cool-season lows and occasional Mistral pulses generates rideable, often fun-sized waves. Offshore winds from N, NNE, NE, and ENE blow 17–21% of the time, offering the best windows for clean conditions. The presence of storms in the Gulf of Lion and the Tyrrhenian Sea feeds the dominant S, SSW, SW, and WSW swell directions, making this the go-to window for surfers looking for the most reliable waves.

Fair Surf Season (April – May & September – October)

Spring and autumn transition months bring a drop in average swell height to 0.6–0.7 m, with periods slipping to 4.5–4.7 s. The frequency of ideal offshore winds falls to 12–17%, and the swell becomes increasingly dominated by weaker southerly and westerly pulses. April and October still see occasional storm events that can push waves into the 1–1.5 m range, especially when a passing low aligns with an offshore wind from the north. However, the overall energy is lower, and surfers need to pick their days carefully – early mornings with a light N-NE breeze often provide the best chance at a glassy, groveling session.

Low Surf Season (June – August)

Summertime at Ristorante is characterized by a marked downturn in both swell and favorable wind. Average wave heights sink to a minimal 0.5 m, with periods only around 4.0 s. The dominant swell directions shift to WSW and SW, but wave heights rarely exceed 0.5 m – mostly micro and choppy. Offshore wind from the N-NE quadrant is present only 8–9% of the time, while onshore breezes from the south and southwest prevail, often ruining what little shape there is. The intense summer heat leads to thermal gradients that produce a steady afternoon sea breeze, further degrading conditions. Only a stray long-period pulse from a distant storm might offer a brief, clean window, but for the most part, this is a time to focus on other activities or explore sheltered corners of the coast.

October: Stepping up in energy

October sees a clear increase in surf activity. Average swell height rises to 0.7 m and period to 4.7 s. The dominant swell directions are S (16.9%), SSE (16.1%), and SW (11.8%), with WSW (11.0%) still significant. The percentage of offshore wind improves to 14%, with NE (10.5%) and NNE (8.7%) providing the cleanest conditions. As the North Atlantic storm track starts to affect the Mediterranean more directly, the frequency of strong, long-period swell events increases. The combination of a solid S-SW swell and a NE offshore breeze – often associated with a high-pressure over central Europe – can produce surprisingly good, rippable waves in the 1–1.5 m range. October is arguably the transition month where the waiting game begins to pay off more consistently.
