Best Surf Season (December - April)

During these months, the Pacific coast of Costa Rica experiences the peak of the dry season, characterized by strong, consistent trade winds from the northeast that blow offshore across the Nicoya Peninsula. At Roca Loca, this translates to glassy morning conditions with a steady diet of SSW swell wrapping around the point. The average wave height sits between 1.0m and 1.2m, with periods often exceeding 13 seconds, delivering powerful, long-period groundswell that reels down the reef. The combination of clean offshore winds and solid swell makes this the prime window for classic Roca Loca waves.

Fair Surf Season (May & November)

May and November serve as transition months between the dry and wet seasons. During these months, the trade winds weaken and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) shifts north, allowing for occasional south-hemisphere swells. The swell height can reach up to 1.3m in May with periods of 14 seconds, offering some of the longest period waves of the year. However, wind conditions become more variable, with a higher chance of afternoon onshore breezes from the west. Early morning sessions are still rewarding, making these months a solid option for those willing to time the tides.

Low Surf Season (June - October)

The rainy season dominates from June through October, bringing increased cloud cover, precipitation, and a significant uptick in onshore winds from the WSW and W. The average wave height remains respectable around 1.4m, and the period still hovers in the 13-second range, but wind quality takes a nosedive. The percentage of ideal wind drops to as low as 25% in September. During this period, the swell direction shifts slightly more south-southwest, and the combination of onshore wind and powerful swell can create choppy, blown-out conditions. However, brief windows of light variable winds in the early mornings or during passing cold fronts can still produce punchy, rideable waves for the dedicated surfer.

November: The Transition Back to Quality

November marks a significant improvement in overall conditions. The average swell height drops slightly to 1.2m, but the period remains robust at 12.4 seconds. The swell is overwhelmingly from the SSW (91.6%), with a consistent band of 1-1.5m waves (70.1%) and still some 1.5-2m sets (8.4%). Ideal wind jumps to 35%, tied for the highest of the year. The trade winds are rebuilding, and the percentage of light offshore flows from the east increases. While onshore winds still occur (SW, WSW, W), the early mornings are often perfect with glassy conditions and clean lines. November is a fantastic month for intermediate surfers and professionals alike, offering consistent, well-shaped waves with a good success rate for morning sessions.
