By May, average height slips to 1.5m and ideal wind plummets to 25%, making for a more erratic forecast. On the autumn side, September sees a rebound with 1.5m swell and 36% offshore wind, signalling the first stirrings of the winter storm track. These months deliver rippable waves when conditions align, but require patience and flexibility to dodge the increasing dominance of onshore afternoon breezes.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer settles over Vancouver Island with a dramatic drop in wave energy. Average swell heights bottom out around 1.2m and the swell direction shifts predominantly to W and WSW with long-period background energy but very little size. The real killer, however, is the wind regime. The percentage of offshore (quality) wind hits an annual low of 17% in July, as the thermal trough and high pressure over the interior pull persistent onshore and cross-shore flow from the west and northwest. The result is mostly small, choppy conditions best suited for a longboard or a groveler. For dedicated storm chasers, this is the time to explore other pursuits – or patiently wait for a rare summer groundswell and an early morning easterly.
