Best Surf Season (October - March)

The winter months deliver the most consistent and powerful swells of the year at San Pancho. As the North Pacific storm track shifts south, a steady diet of long-period groundswell from the W to WNW window lights up the beach break. Average wave heights hover around 1.0-1.1m with periods often exceeding 13 seconds, translating to solid, punchy waves. The catch? The dominant high-pressure system over the interior of North America funnels strong N to NW winds, which blow directly onshore. The surging northerly flow trashes the wave faces more often than not. Still, when a cold front pushes through or the pressure gradient relaxes, brief windows of lighter wind align with the swell, rewarding those who chase the early morning hours. This is the season for the dedicated hunter. Look for brief gaps of light or variable winds, and you'll score some of the best, most rippable waves of the year.

Fair Surf Season (April - May, November)

The shoulder months bring a noticeable shift in both swell and wind patterns. During April and May, the dominant swell rotates to the SW and WSW directions, which are far from ideal for the WNW-facing beach. Though the wave period remains long, the swell power is reduced by refraction and shadowing. Wind conditions also become more variable, with a slight increase in southerly components, but onshore northerlies still dominate. November sees a return of more favorable W to WNW swell, but the wind consistency picks up as winter approaches. These months offer only occasional windows of clean, lined-up surf; you'll need to be selective about your sessions and flexible with the board choice. A step-up or a groveler may be needed depending on the day.

Low Surf Season (June - October)

Summer and early fall are dominated by southerly quarter swell from the tropical Pacific and distant Southern Hemisphere storms. The beach is largely shadowed from these directions, resulting in smaller, less organized waves. Average heights remain around 0.9-1.1m, but the energy is often too angled or weak to wrap effectively into the bay. On the positive side, the wind regime shifts dramatically. The North American monsoon and the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone bring lighter, more favorable offshore flows from the S and SW quadrants for extended periods. The percentage of ideal conditions jumps to 35-41% from July through September. However, even with perfect wind, the swell quality is mediocre at best. This period is best suited for beginners, longboarding on small days, or travelers who don't mind marginal surf in exchange for empty lineups. October marks the beginning of the transition back to winter swells, but the early month still carries summer characteristics.

December: Peak Winter Groundswell, Wind Wars

December is the classic winter month for San Pancho. Swell from the optimum window reigns supreme: WNW (44.5%), W (37.1%), and NW (4.8%) make up over 86% of the total. Wave heights average 1.0m, with a healthy distribution: W has 10.8% in 1-1.5m and 0.1% over 1.5m; WNW has 22.8% in 1-1.5m and 0.9% in 1.5-2m. Periods are solid at 13.4 seconds, meaning long-period, powerful groundswell. This is the month for legitimate head-high to overhead sets when a proper WNW storm track aligns. The battle, as always, is the wind. N (34.8%) and NNW (27.9%) combine for over 62% of the time, all onshore. Ideal conditions are only 11%. You must pick your moments. The best chance is when a cold front passes and the wind shifts to a brief NW or even SE direction before settling back to the north. Those post-frontal windows can be magic: crisp, offshore winds and long, peeling waves. December demands flexibility and a willingness to pull the trigger at short notice. When the stars align, it's worth every moment of waiting.
