With average swell heights climbing to 0.8-0.9m and periods pushing 5.5-5.6s, the Tyrrhenian Sea becomes a consistent producer of rideable waves. The dominant W and WSW swells align perfectly with the beach's SW exposure, while offshore winds from the NNW through W blow at their peak, reaching 37% ideal conditions in December. Deep low-pressure systems tracking across the Mediterranean generate powerful, long-period groundswells that wrap into the bay, delivering clean, rippable faces. This is the prime window for any surfer looking to score solid sessions on a regular basis.

Fair Surf Season (March - April, September - October)

Spring and autumn offer a mixed bag. March retains some winter punch with 0.7m averages and 27% offshore wind odds, but the period drops to 5.3s as local windswell mixes with fading groundswell. April sees a further decline in both height and wind consistency. September marks the slow transition back, with 0.5m averages and 17% offshore winds, improving through October as the first autumn gales stir up the basin. These months demand a keen eye on the forecast; conditions can vary from flat to fun within a single week. When a solid W swell couples with a light NE breeze, the results can be surprisingly good.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer brings the doldrums to this corner of the Mediterranean. From May through August, average heights dwindle to 0.4-0.5m and periods sink to 4.2-4.6s, dominated by short-period, choppy windswell. The Azores High locks in place, squashing storm activity and favouring light, thermally driven winds. Ideal offshore wind frequency drops to a meager 8-13%, making clean conditions a rare commodity. Most days offer small, weak, messy waves best suited to a foamie or longboard. It is a time for dawn patrols with minimal expectations, but the rare combo of a distant W swell and a gentle offshore can still produce a few playful ankle-to-knee-high runners.

May: Summer Doldrums Arrive

May marks the start of the low season. Average swell height plummets to 0.5m with a period of just 4.6s, dominated by short-period, locally generated windswell. W swell remains the most common (34.2% of waves), but the vast majority is under 1m. Ideal offshore wind conditions occur only 13% of the time, making clean waves a rare treat. The swell is often weak and choppy, best suited for a soft-top or a longboard on the rare calm day. The combination of long days and small surf makes this month ideal for beach activities other than surfing.
