Best Surf Season (October - March)

The heart of winter unleashes its full fury upon Sao Pedro de Moel, with the North Atlantic pumping out consistent, powerful swells from the NW to WNW quadrants. Average heights hover around 2m to 2.4m, with long periods often exceeding 12 seconds, delivering heavy, grinding peaks. Offshore wind frequencies peak during this period, especially in December (37%) and January (36%), as high pressure systems settle over Iberia, funneling clean east to southerly breezes. This is prime time for experienced surfers to charge the sandbars.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Transition months bring a mix of leftover winter energy and early autumn pulses. April sees average swell heights drop to 1.8m with periods around 11s, while September picks up again to 1.5m and 10.5s. Ideal wind frequencies drop to 20% and 17% respectively, as the Azores High begins to influence the region, creating more variable winds. While not as consistent, these months offer cleaner conditions on the right synoptic setup, often with smaller but rippable waves.

Low Surf Season (May to August)

Summer is a quiet period for this exposed W-NW facing beach. Swell heights shrink to a meager 1.3-1.5m, with periods dropping below 10 seconds. The dominant wind shifts to a persistent NW to N regime, which blows directly onshore at Sao Pedro, chopping up what little swell there is. Ideal offshore wind frequencies plummet to single digits (5-9%), making clean surfing sessions a rare luxury. This is the time for flat spells, groveling smaller boards, or seeking shelter elsewhere.

August: Slight Summer Uptick

August shows a marginal improvement over July, with average swell height still at 1.3m but period edging up to 9.0s. Swell direction remains NW-dominated (50.8%), with some WNW (16.1%). Ideal wind is still poor at 7%, as N (29.9%) and NNW (35.5%) winds persist. However, occasional weak low-pressure systems can send a bit more energy, and the longer period waves (10-14s) can produce rideable 1-1.5m waves on the rare day with a S wind. It's a month for patient surfers who are willing to hunt for the tiny windows of clean surf.
