Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic flexes its muscles during these months, delivering the largest and most powerful swell of the year to Sennen Cove. Average wave heights consistently exceed 2m, often reaching 2.5m, with long periods of 10-12 seconds. The dominant swell direction is from the W to WSW, which, while not ideal, can produce chunky, rideable waves that wrap into the bay. The real magic happens when a deep low-pressure system tracks south of Iceland, sending a long-period NW or WNW swell straight into the bay – that's when Sennen truly lights up. However, the wind is a fickle beast: ideal offshore conditions (S to WSW) occur only 8-13% of the time, and the region is frequently battered by strong W to NW onshore winds that chop things up. Patience and a keen eye on the forecast are key.

Fair Surf Season (April - June)

As the Atlantic storm track weakens, swell heights drop to a more manageable 1.2-1.6m, with periods averaging 8.7-10.1 seconds. This is the season of fun-sized waves and cleaner conditions. The percentage of ideal offshore winds increases to 14-15%, and the winds are generally lighter, making for friendlier lineups. The swell angle shifts slightly, with W and WNW swells becoming more frequent – a good sign for quality at Sennen. While you won’t find the epic power of winter, you’ll find plenty of rippable, punchy waves that are perfect for longboards and shortboards alike. This is the sweet spot for consistency over raw power.

Low Surf Season (July - September)

Summer settles in and the surf takes a long nap. Average wave heights hover around a sleepy 1.2-1.4m, with short periods of 8.2-9.5 seconds. The vast majority of swell comes from the W, but it’s weak and windswell-driven. The prevailing wind shifts to the NW – directly onshore for Sennen Cove – which ruins the wave shape and creates messy, bumpy conditions. The percentage of offshore wind drops to a frustrating 12-15%, and even when it blows from the south, the swell is usually too small to get excited about. A rare summer cold front can bring a few days of clean, waist-high waves, but generally, this is the time to focus on other summer activities.

July: The Summer Lull in Full Effect

July is the nadir of surf at Sennen Cove. Average swell height is just 1.2m, and the period drops to 8.2s – choppy and messy. The swell direction is heavily dominated by W (37.7%) and WNW (16.4%), but these are mostly short-period windswell from the prevailing westerlies. The real killer is the wind: offshore conditions plummet to 12%. Onshore NW winds clock in at 9.7%, and combined with N and WNW onshore directions, the wave quality is often poor. The surface is riddled with bumps and cross-chop. A rare ‘southerly buster’ can bring clean conditions, but the swell will be tiny. This month is best suited for those who can enjoy small, weak waves or just take a break and enjoy the beach.
