Best Surf Season (December - March)

During the heart of the Austral summer, the trade wind regime relaxes and the monsoon trough shifts southward, allowing for frequent offshore flow from the north and northwest quadrants. Ideal wind conditions top 50% in January and February, and swell from the south and southwest – the most favorable directions for Sero Beach – becomes more prominent. While average wave heights hover in the small to fun-sized range (0.5-1m), the combination of light offshore breezes and punchy 6-9s periods delivers clean, rippable waves. The real magic happens when a late-season tropical low or a strong front pushes long-period swell from the south, creating lined-up walls under cloudless skies.

Fair Surf Season (April & November)

These transitional months see a tug-of-war between the retreating monsoon and building southeast trades. Wind consistency drops to 25% in April and 12% in November, and the dominant swell direction shifts toward the southeast. However, occasional windows of offshore winds from the north or northwest can still align with a fading south swell. Expect average wave periods around 7-8s and heights from 0.8 to 1.0m – not firing, but with proper timing you can still find fun, shoulder-high waves without the crowds.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

The southeast trade winds lock in from May through October, hammering Sero Beach with near-constant onshore flow from the south and southeast. Ideal offshore wind plummets to below 10% in most months, and often below 5%. Swell is plentiful – average heights climb to 1.3-1.5m from June to August – but the direction is almost exclusively from the SSE (over 80% of all swell energy). This not only puts the waves in a less favorable alignment, but also pairs with the onshore wind to create choppy, weak conditions. The south-facing exposure means the best south swell can still sneak in, but without clean wind the quality is severely compromised. This is a time for dawn patrols, storm watches, and hoping for a rogue low-pressure system to disrupt the trades.

July: The Heart of Winter Storms

July sees the swell average peak at 1.5m, driven by a relentless stream of southern ocean groundswell. A whopping 79.4% of waves come from SSE, with the remaining 18.6% from SE. Wave periods settle at 7.3s, still on the short side. Unfortunately, offshore wind is almost nonexistent at 2%. The dominant wind is SE at 66.5%, with strong to moderate speeds – gusts up to 30+ kph common. The sea state is usually messy, with big but bumpy swells that are difficult to surf. The only saving grace is the occasional wrap from a pure south swell, but without clean wind, it's a rare treat. For the dedicated surfer, early mornings before the seabreeze kicks in offer the best chance at a decent wave.
