Best Surf Season (April - August)

The austral autumn and winter months deliver the most consistent conditions for this NW-facing sand-bottom point. During this period, the South Atlantic high-pressure system strengthens, driving persistent offshore winds from the SSW to S quadrant. The dominant swell, generated by roaring extratropical storms in the South Pacific and Southern Ocean, arrives from the SW with average periods above 12 seconds. This creates fun to solid, rippable waves in the 1-1.5m range, with frequent pulses of 1.5-2.5m pumping swell. April and May see the highest percentage of ideal wind (up to 55%), while June through August offer the biggest average wave heights. When the right combination of a long-period SW swell and a stiff, dry wind off the Namib Desert aligns, Skeleton Bay comes alive with grinding, rideable walls.

Fair Surf Season (March & September)

These transition months offer a mix of decent surf and less consistent conditions. March still benefits from strong South Atlantic high pressure, with 48% ideal wind and an average swell of 1.3m. However, the occasional early autumn storm can bring stronger wind from the NW (onshore) for a few days. September sees a slight uptick in onshore winds as the high-pressure system begins to weaken, but large SW groundswells continue to roll through, often at 1.5m+ with periods exceeding 12 seconds. Expect some clean days mixed with sessions that are more wind-affected.

Low Surf Season (October - February)

During the austral spring and summer, the South Atlantic high pressure weakens and migrates south, allowing more frequent onshore winds from the NW and WSW to affect the spot. Ideal wind percentages drop to 37-41%, and the dominant SW swell becomes less consistent, with average heights dipping slightly to 1.2-1.3m. While January and February can still see the occasional fun-sized SSW swell, the wind is often gusty from the west or northwest, making it tough to find clean conditions. These months are best for patient surfers willing to sit through short-lived windows of offshore flow. Still, when the right combination emerges – a small but punchy SW swell and a rare land-breeze – it can be worth the wait.

June: Winter Swell Peak

June brings the winter solstice and some of the biggest swells of the year. Average wave height reaches 1.5m, and the period peaks at 12.7s, meaning powerful, long-period groundswells. The dominant SW swell (71.5%) features a large chunk in the 1.5-2m (22.4%) and 2-2.5m (7.0%) categories, with a hint of XL (>2.5m at 0.1%). Wind remains favorable: offshore winds from S-SSW blow 52% of the time, though there is a slight increase in lighter onshore breezes from the east and north compared to May. The key is to watch for synoptic setups where a strong cold front passes to the south, generating a long-period SW swell that arrives under a fresh S wind. Those are the sessions you will remember: heavy, hollow, and demanding.
