Best Surf Season (June - August)

The austral winter is prime time at South Wall Ballina. As the subtropical ridge shifts north, the Tasman Sea comes alive with a more consistent feed of S and SSE swells, which are the most favorable for this southeast-facing break. Simultaneously, the frequency of offshore winds from the W/NW quadrant peaks, often exceeding 25% of the time in July. This combination of quality swell direction and clean wind windows creates the most consistent surf during these months, with average wave periods often pushing into the 9-second range, offering punchy, rideable waves.

Fair Surf Season (March - May, September - November)

The shoulder seasons bring a mix of conditions. During March-May, the dominant ESE to SE swell is still prevalent, but occasional southerly groundswells offer hope. The wind regimes become more variable, with a higher percentage of light northerly breezes that can be cross-shore or even offshore. While the average swell height remains a solid 1.5m to 1.7m, the quality is often limited by either the wrong swell angle or a less-than-ideal wind. September through November sees a steady transition back toward the summer pattern, but early spring can still deliver excellent days with a strong high-pressure system parked over the Tasman, providing light winds and long-period S/SSW swell.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

The height of summer is the most challenging time for consistent quality at South Wall Ballina. The dominant swell directions are locked in from E and ESE, which are far from optimal and produce mainly windswell or short-period, crumbly waves. The wind patterns are also the least favorable, with frequent NE to ENE breezes that are not offshore. While the average wave height hovers around 1.5m, the average periods of 8-9 seconds and the persistent onshore component mean the waves are often messy. Surfers must rely on infrequent tropical cyclone swells or deep lows in the Tasman to generate the right direction, but these events are rare. Wind is ideal only about 27-33% of the time, and when it is good, the swell often is not.
