Best Surf Season (May - August)

The Southern Hemisphere winter unleashes its full fury upon Still Bay during these months, with the roaring forties pumping relentless SW and SSW swell directly into the SSE-facing beach. Average wave heights climb to a solid 2.0-2.2m, period lengthens to 12-12.4s, and the wind clock flips in our favor: high pressure cells over the interior trigger frequent light to moderate offshore breezes from NW and NNE, delivering ideal conditions over 47-58% of the time. This is the prime window for pumping, firing surf with long, clean walls that peel down the sandbanks.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Transition months offer a mixed bag. April and September still see strong SSW and SW swell averaging 2.0-2.2m and periods around 11.5-11.7s, but the offshore wind window narrows to roughly 35% ideal time. The wind patterns are more fickle: cold fronts brushing the coast bring intermittent onshore pulses, yet when the interior high settles in, the setup can produce rippable to solid waves with occasional long-period gems.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

Summer and early autumn are tough for consistent quality. Average swell height drops to 1.9-2.1m and period shortens to 10.6-11.2s, with the dominant swell from SSW still present but often accompanied by strong onshore winds from the ESE to S quadrant. The percentage of ideal offshore wind plummets to 13-22%, and the majority of days are marred by choppy, crumbly conditions. A few cold-front passages or cut-off lows can deliver brief windows of fun-sized waves, but overall expect a lot of groveling and wind-affected surf.

December: Full Summer – Low Expectation, Small Windows

December caps the low season with average swell of 1.9m, period 10.6s, and ideal wind at 16%. Swell distribution is similar to January: SSW (28.4%), SW (20.4%), and S (14.2%). Wind is heavily onshore from E (15.5%), ESE (16.7%), and SE (8.2%). Offshore northerlies barely register (N 0.8%). Days with clean fun, good waves are scarce. Most sessions will involve small, wind-textured surf. A sneaky cut-off low can bring a pulse of longer period swell and a northerly wind, offering a brief taste of winter magic.
