Best Surf Season (May - July)

The heart of the South African winter delivers the most consistent combination of clean conditions and quality swell at Sunrise. As the mid-latitude storm track shifts north, a steady procession of cold fronts spins up in the Southern Ocean, generating long-period groundswells that wrap into the Indian Ocean. During these months, the dominant high-pressure systems park over the interior, funnelling reliable offshore breezes from the WSW through NW for over 50% of the time. Average wave heights hover around 1.8m with periods pushing past 10 seconds, creating punchy, rippable waves that peak in the 1.5-2.5m range. The swell window works best when the fetch aligns from the E through SE, but even the more southerly swells – which dominate the mix – get groomed to perfection by the western quadrant winds. This is the window to score lined-up, offshore perfection.

Fair Surf Season (April & August - September)

April and August to September mark the transitional shoulders where conditions are still decent but less consistent. April sees a good mix of swell directions with the E-ESE combo providing 30% of the energy, but the ideal wind window drops to 33% as the synoptic pattern starts to shift. August and September maintain solid swell heights above 1.8m and periods around 10 seconds, but the percentage of offshore wind slides back to 39% and 26% respectively. During these months, the windows of opportunity are frequent enough for a dedicated session, but you will have to pick your days – the trade-off between swell direction and wind quality becomes more pronounced. Expect fun, clean waves on the right days, but be ready for onshore slop when the wind swings around to the east.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

The summer half of the year is the low season for Sunrise, with ideal offshore winds dropping to between 15% and 23% of the time. While the swell direction is actually favourable – the dominant ENE to SE band delivers the majority of the energy, with heights consistently in the 1.5-2.5m range – the wind is almost always a problem. The Indian Ocean high-pressure cell strengthens and sits to the south, driving persistent E to NE winds that blow directly onshore and ruin the wave face. Wave periods also dip below 9 seconds from December through February, adding chop and messiness to the mix. The rare windows occur when a passing cold front or low-pressure trough brings a brief shift to offshore W-NW winds, often in the wake of a storm. But for the most part, this is a season of small, wind-affected surf where only the most dedicated should bother paddling out.

December: Summer Return

December rounds out the year much as it started – a low season for Sunrise. The average swell height is 1.7m with a period of 8.5 seconds, the shortest of any month. The ideal wind percentage is only 15%. Swell direction is favourable from the E quadrant: ENE (15.0%), E (16.3%), ESE (12.4%), SE (15.1%), SSE (19.6%), S (15.9%) – so the window is wide, but the energy is weak. The wind is a constant problem: NE (19.9%), NNE (8.3%), and ENE (13.4%) together account for over 41% of the observations. The SSW wind (17.9%) is again the second most common, bringing side-offshore conditions that can improve S swell slightly, but the overall effect is messy. Offshore winds from the W-NW quadrant are pitiful: W (0.6%), WNW (0.5%), NW (0.5%), NNW (0.7%) – barely 2.3% total. The Indian Ocean summer high is fully established, driving relentless E winds. The rare surfable days come when a weak trough or low-pressure system moves through, shifting the wind to the W for a few hours. With the swell mostly short-period and wind-affected, don't expect much. This is a month to recharge the boards and wait for the next winter season.
