Best Surf Season (April - May, September - November)

These months deliver the most consistent combination of long-period SW/SSW groundswell and high-quality offshore winds at Supersuck. The Indian Ocean cyclone season ramps up significantly in the spring and autumn, firing powerful swell trains toward the outer reef. Statistically, April, May, September, October, and November see the highest percentages of offshore wind (well over 70% ideal), which means clean, glassy faces most days. The predominant SSW swell wraps into the bay with surprising push, offering working right-handers that reel down the reef. The periods stay in the 13–14 second range, providing plenty of energy for carveable yet powerful surf. This is prime time for the experienced surfer looking to score session after session without the crowds.

Fair Surf Season (March, June - August)

The shoulder months bring a noticeable shift in wind reliability. While the swell still pumps – especially in June, July, and August when average heights peak at 1.6–1.7m and periods hover around 14 seconds – the offshore window (from the S to SW quadrant) shrinks. The percentage of ideal wind drops to the 40–57% range, meaning mornings or late afternoons can still offer clean conditions, but the midday often sees a mix of variable breezes. March serves as a transition, with similar swell but a need to hunt for the right tide/wind combo. During these months, the consistent groundswell keeps the wave quality decent even when the wind lightens, making it a good period for intermediate surfers willing to sit through a bit of texture.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

The heart of the monsoon season brings the most challenging conditions. The percentage of ideal offshore wind plummets to a meager 15–34%, with persistent westerly and north-westerly winds (commonly from the N, WNW, NW, NNW) ruining the wave shape. Swell directions remain dominated by SSW/SW, but the average period drops to 12.6–12.8 seconds and heights sit around 1.3m – still surfable but lacking the punch of the main season. The pattern is often one of strong onshore winds and lumpy, choppy surf, especially in January and February. Occasional relief comes during brief windows when the wind backs to the south, but consistent quality is hard to come by. For the die-hard surfer, it is a time to focus on technique in weaker, less organized waves – or to travel elsewhere.

July: Heavy Swells, Finicky Winds

July continues the theme of large swells – average height 1.7m, period 14.4s – but the ideal wind percentage slips to 46%. The wind is now dominated by the SE (47.7%) and ESE (40.8%) quadrants, but a significant portion of the SE wind is in the 20–30kph range (31.7%), which can produce lumpy conditions if it clocks around to the SSE. Swell remains predominantly from the SSW (71%) and S (21.8%), with heights often in the 1.5–2.5m range (over 52% of the total). The long period gives these waves serious punch, and when the wind is true offshore (ESE), the reef cranks out hollow, powerful lefts (due to the swell direction wrapping around). The challenge is timing: cleanest conditions occur in the very early morning and late afternoon, with a tricky midday period. Despite the wind statistics, many long-period sets still produce rideable waves even when the surface is slightly textured. July is for the experienced charger who can handle size and manage the wind swings.
