Best Surf Season (October - November & March - April)

The window for truly clean, good surf at Surfer's Beach is narrow, defined by the clash of building North Atlantic swell and favorable southern quadrant winds. October stands out as the sweet spot: the North Pacific storm track begins to spin up, sending long-period (10s) groundswell from the NNE and N directions that wrap nicely into this NNW-facing beach — accounting for over 26% of the swell spectrum. Crucially, the wind machine shifts just enough to deliver offshore flow from the S and SSW a significant portion of the time, pushing the 'ideal wind' statistic to a yearly high of 51%. November maintains the momentum with slightly larger average swell (1.5m) and similar period, though the wind becomes less reliable (33% ideal) as winter patterns lock in. March and April offer a second chance, with March's 1.5m average at 10s period and a gradually improving wind window (31% ideal). April sees the wind improve further to 36% ideal, though the swell average dips to 1.3m. These shoulder months are the only times when the percentage of N and NNE swell (over 25-30%) coincides with a decent chance of light S to SSW winds.

Fair Surf Season (December - February & May)

The core winter months — December, January, and February — bring the largest and most consistent swell of the year. Average heights sit solidly in the 1.5-1.6m range with periods consistently hitting 10s, and the dominant NNE direction provides powerful, rideable waves. However, the trade-off is brutal. The wind pattern locks into a relentless ENE to E flow, which, while not directly onshore (onshore is N/NNW), is a cross-shore that often introduces texture and bump. Ideal wind percentages plummet to 23% in December, 26% in January, and 27% in February. You'll need to pick your windows carefully — often a post-frontal southerly flow that squeaks through for a few hours. May sits in the fair category because while the wind ideal jumps to 47%, the swell drops off dramatically. Average height falls to 1.1m and period shortens to 8.7s, with a high proportion of weak, short-period ENE windswell. Rides become grovelly and inconsistent, though on a good S wind day, the beach can still offer some fun, small waves.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

The summer doldrums set in hard. From June to August, the average swell height bottoms out at 1.0m and periods dip into the 6-7s range — marginal, choppy surf by any standard. The swell direction is overwhelmingly from the ENE and E (over 80% combined in July and August), which is far from the optimal N and NNE window and rarely offers any shape at this beach. While the wind ideal percentage is decent in June (46%) and August (38%), the lack of significant swell makes surfing a frustrating, crumbly affair. September is a transition month where the wind ideal reaches 49%, but the swell is still weak (1.1m, 9.1s period) and dominated by ENE energy. Only the rare arrival of an early-season N or NNE groundswell, combined with a southerly 'Santa Ana' style wind, can salvage a day. For the most part, leave your log at home and find a windswell break with better exposure.

March: The Spring Swing Begins

March sees a slight easing in average swell to 1.5m, but the period holds at 10.0s. The swell composition shifts subtly: NNE swell increases to 24.3% — the highest proportion of this excellent direction so far this year. The 1-2m range is packed, promising plenty of 'fun' to 'pumping' waves. Crucially, the wind field starts to transition. The percentage of offshore S and SSW winds climbs to 4.2%, and the overall ideal wind rating jumps to 31%. The dominant ENE flow weakens slightly to 30.8%, while E winds (22.0%) remain common. This month offers the best ratio of size to potential clean windows since November. The North Atlantic is still active, and when a low pressure system tracks north of the area, the post-frontal S flow can align perfectly with a fading N or NNE swell — that's the March magic moment.
