Best Surf Season (December - March)

The southern hemisphere summer brings a consistent flow of long-period swells from the west-northwest through southwest, perfectly aligned for Taapuna. The South Pacific storm track fires up, and average wave heights sit in the 1.7-1.8m range with periods of 12-13 seconds – solid, powerful, and rippable. Offshore trade winds from the east and southeast blow over 35-41% of the time, grooming clean faces. This is when the reef really comes alive, delivering pumping waves that rival any in Australiae.

Fair Surf Season (April & November)

April and November are transition months where the balance of swell direction shifts. April is dominated by large south swells that struggle to wrap into the west-facing reef, but the offshore wind percentage remains high at 41%, offering rare days with crisp conditions from a stray SW pulse. November sees a return of west-northwest swell energy, mixing in with the fading south swells. The average wave height drops slightly to 1.7m, but with ideal wind 36% of the time, there are windows of quality surf.

Low Surf Season (May - October)

During the southern hemisphere winter and early spring, the swell machine focuses on the south-southeast direction. Massive groundswells of 2m and up pound Tahiti’s southern reefs, but Taapuna is left mostly flat or with weak, refracted energy. Offshore wind percentages drop to 25-33%, and the periods remain solid, but the lack of west in the swell makes for frustrating conditions. When a rare west-northwest pulse aligns with the trade winds, it can be epic, but such days are few and far between.

June: Mid-Winter Lull

June continues the south swell dominance with 2.0m average and 12.8s period. Over 90% of the swell comes from S-SSE directions. Offshore wind frequency drops to 28%. Taapuna sees very little usable wave energy. Only the occasional long-period NW groundswell can break the monotony.
