Best Surf Season (December - March)

The North Atlantic winter roars to life, delivering the largest and most powerful swell of the year to Tafedna. Average wave heights hover around 2.3m with long periods of 12-13s, often reaching 'very powerful' territory. While the dominant swell direction is from the NNW-NW quadrant, the occasional west and south-west pulses align directly with this West-South-West facing beach, creating high-quality, glassy lines when the wind blows offshore from the north-east. The trade-off is a higher chance of onshore winds, but with nearly 60% of the time seeing ideal wind conditions, the winter months consistently offer the best window for premium surf. An active North Atlantic storm track drives these conditions, and a negative NAO can further enhance wave heights and favourably steer low-pressure systems.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & October - November)

These transitional months see a noticeable drop in average wave period and height, with swell settling into the 1.6-2.1m range and periods between 9-12s. The swell direction remains stubbornly locked in the NNW-NW, but the wind becomes more reliable, especially in spring and autumn. While ideal swell directions (SSW-SW-W) are still rare, the improving wind consistency and still-rideable wave heights make for solid, if not epic, conditions. Expect punchy, fun-sized surf on the better days, with occasional long-period pulses from early-season storms in October and November offering a glimpse of winter's promise.

Low Surf Season (June - September)

Summer settles in and the Atlantic settles down. Swell heights average 1.6-1.8m, but periods drop sharply to 7-10s, producing mostly weak, short-period groundswell. The swell direction is almost exclusively from the NNW (over 90% of the time in July and August), which means the waves arrive with a heavy side-shore angle relative to the spot's WSW orientation. The good news is that the wind is very consistent from offshore quadrants (NNE-NE) during the day, offering clean conditions, but the lack of swell direction alignment and minimal power results in small, grovelly waves. This is the time for summer fun, not for charging. The Azores High tends to block storm activity, leading to long periods of minimal swell.

April: Spring Lull Begins

The average swell height dips to 2.1m and period drops to 10.8s, signaling a shift to smaller, less organized surf. The swell direction is overwhelmingly NNW (46.4%) and NW (19.9%), with only 1.0% from W. Wind ideal percentage is now just 40%, with NNE (28.7%) and N (23.0%) still dominant. The drop in period means waves are more 'average and punchy' than powerful. While the wind remains favourable, the lack of west-south-west swell and the shorter periods result in smaller, less consistent waves. This is a fair month for a surf session, but not for chasing quality.
