Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic roars to life during the autumn and winter months, and Tapia de Casariego reaps the benefits. As the polar jet stream strengthens and low-pressure systems march eastward across the Atlantic, Tapia is consistently fed by powerful NW and NNW swells. Average swell heights hover around 1.6-1.7m with long periods of 11-12.5s, delivering pumping waves that can easily reach the 1.5-2.5m range on the best days. Offshore winds from the S and SSW dominate over 50% of the time, creating clean, groomed conditions. This is prime time for experienced surfers to chase the heavy, long-period groundswells that make Tapia a world-class winter wave.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September mark the transition between the dominant winter pattern and the languid summer regime. Swell energy drops slightly to averages around 1.1-1.3m and periods of 10-10.5s, but there are still plenty of fun-sized waves in the 1-1.5m range coming from the NW and NNW. The percentage of ideal offshore winds is still reasonable at 38-39%, though more frequent easterly and northeasterly breezes can introduce occasional chop. These months offer a sweet spot for intermediate surfers who want solid waves without the extreme power of winter, and the water temperatures begin to moderate.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer brings a dramatic lull in surf energy to Tapia. The Azores High builds northward, deflecting storm tracks far to the north of Spain. Average swell heights drop to a meager 0.8-1.0m, with periods often below 9s — resulting in choppy and small conditions. The dominant swell direction remains NNW and NW, but these are often short-period windswells generated by local sea breezes. Offshore wind consistency plummets to only 21-25%, as the prevailing winds shift to onshore from the N and NE, ruining wave quality. June through August are generally best left for longboarders and beginners seeking micro-sessions, though occasional weak frontal passages can provide brief pulses of rideable swell.

May: Summer Onset, Smaller and Chopper

By May, the surf energy drops off significantly. Average height is just 1.0m and period shortens to 9.7s, falling into the average range but often feeling small. Swell directions shift: NNW (36.4%) and NW (32.9%) still dominate, but these are now mostly short-period windswells. Ideal offshore wind plummets to only 31%, with strong NE (14.7%) and ENE (17.2%) winds creating onshore chop. The waves become groveling at best, with plenty of micro days under 0.5m. May is suited for longboard or no-surf days, though occasional frontal passages can inject a pulse of cleaner, longer-period swell.
