The Cribbar, one of the UK’s most renowned big-wave spots, offers its best conditions during the winter months, particularly from November to February, when powerful and consistent ground swells dominate. During this period, ground swell frequency is at its highest, peaking at 79% in January, with mean swell sizes averaging 2.1m to 2.2m. These months provide the largest and cleanest waves, though wind conditions are often unfavorable, with good wind days occurring only 11-13% of the time. Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to October) bring a mix of ground and wind swells, with ground swells gradually decreasing in favor of wind swells as summer approaches. The swell size diminishes to around 1.3m-1.7m, offering more manageable but still surfable waves, though wind conditions remain challenging. Summer (June to August) sees the poorest conditions for The Cribbar, with wind swells dominating (68-79%) and mean swell sizes dropping to just 1.1m. Clean offshore winds are rare (14-18% frequency), making quality surf days scarce. For advanced surfers seeking big, powerful waves, late autumn through early winter is the prime window, despite the high likelihood of onshore winds. Those looking for smaller but more frequent waves may find spring or early autumn more suitable, though consistency and quality drop significantly outside the winter peak.
