Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic's fury is unleashed during these months, with powerful extratropical storms marching eastward across the ocean. The Cribbar, exposed to the full brunt of the west to northwest fetch, sees average swell heights consistently above 1.8m and periods lengthening over 10 seconds into the 12-second range – prime for this heavy, deep-water slab. The dominant swell direction is from the W and WSW, which aligns perfectly with the reef's WNW orientation, delivering peaky, long-period groundswell that reels down the line. Wind conditions are marginal, however; the ideal offshore flow from the east to southeast (E, ESE, SE, SSE) occurs only around 23% of the time, often courtesy of high pressure settling over Scandinavia. When the stars align – a deep low tracking north of Scotland, a strong Azores High ridge, and a crisp offshore breeze – The Cribbar transforms into a world-class, heavy-water slab that demands respect and a late drop. This is the window for true XL and charging sessions.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transitional months see a noticeable drop in average swell height to about 1.3m and period settling in the 9.6-10.2s range. The North Atlantic storm track is less active, but occasional strong lows still produce solid, rippable waves in the 1-1.5m range. The wind becomes more variable, and the percentage of ideal offshore wind climbs slightly to 23-27% – a trade-off as sea breezes and weak frontal systems dominate. Swell from the W and WNW still dominate, but the energy is less consistent; expect fun-sized sessions with clean conditions when an early-season or late-season high pressure locks in. While not the prime slab season, these months offer a chance to score The Cribbar with smaller crowds and more forgiving wave heights.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

The summer months are dominated by a persistent Azores High, which deflects the storm track well north of the UK. The Cribbar sees average swell heights barely reaching 1.0-1.2m, with periods dropping into the 8.3-9.3s range – messy, choppy and lacking the power needed to make the reef light up. The wind is problematic; the percentage of ideal offshore wind plummets to 16-18%, with onshore westerlies and sea breezes prevailing. Swell from the W and WNW is still present, but much of it is short-period windswell, leading to grovelling conditions at best. For the average surfer, this is a time to explore other spots; only the rare, deep tropical storm remnant or a rogue low can inject enough juice for a memorable session. Expect small, fun-sized waves on the best days, but don't count on any firing sessions.

February: Peak Winter Grind

February mirrors January in terms of raw energy: average swell height 2.1m, period 12.1s. The swell direction is again dominated by W (36.6%) and WSW (11.4%), with significant contributions from WNW (9.3%) – all ideal for the reef. The distribution of wave heights shows a strong core of 1-2m plus a notable spike in 2-2.5m waves, meaning plenty of firing, heavy sets. Wind patterns are virtually identical to January; ideal offshore flow from the east and southeast sits at 23% of the time. However, the wind rose reveals a slightly higher frequency of southerly winds (S, SSW) which can blow side-offshore if the angle is right. Still, the typical setup is a strong westerly fetch preceding a low-pressure system, followed by a brief window of post-frontal offshore winds. Keep an eye on the NAO index – a negative phase often locks the storm track farther south, bringing more consistent swell to the UK. When the wind cooperates, February can deliver some of the biggest, cleanest waves of the year.
