Best Surf Season (May - August)

The southern winter unleashes the full fury of the South Atlantic, with average swell heights climbing to 2.8-2.9m and periods consistently hovering around 12.4-12.6s. This is prime time for The Hoek, as powerful, long-period groundswells from the WSW to NW quadrant line up perfectly with the west-facing beach. Offshore winds from the SE quadrant (your true offshore, ENE through SE) blow a clean 23-26% of the time, often accompanied by cold fronts that groom the wave faces. When high pressure sets up over the interior, light ESE breezes create glassy conditions right through the afternoon. Expect pumping, heavy, firing waves in the 1.5-2.5m range, with XXL sets pushing over 2.5m during peak storm tracks.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Shoulder months offer a blend of winter power and autumn/spring transition. April sees an average swell of 2.4m at 12.2s, with a rising percentage of SW and WSW groundswell. The wind turns more favorable, with ideal offshore flow 19% of the time, though the NW quadrant begins to contaminate the lineup with onshore slop. September mirrors this pattern — swell averages 2.7m at 12.1s, and while the winter engine is still sputtering, the wind becomes more variable and less consistently offshore (14% ideal). These months reward patience: pick your days when a WSW swell meets a dawn SE wind, and you'll be surfing powerful, rippable waves before the sea breeze kicks up.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

Summer in the southern hemisphere means the South Atlantic storm track shifts poleward, reducing both swell size and quality. Average swell heights still sit at a respectable 2.3-2.4m, but periods drop to 11.1-11.6s, and the percentage of ideal offshore wind plummets to just 7-12%. The dominant winds from SSE and S howl at 30-50kph over 30% of the time, raking the surface into choppy, messy conditions. Swell direction shifts more toward SSW and SW, which wrap in poorly and lack the raw power of the winter groundswells. You'll find the occasional fun-sized, groveling wave in the 0.5-1m range when a weak south swell merges with a brief ESE window, but consistent quality is tough to come by. This is the time for a surf trip to the east coast — or a longboard session on the small, weak leftovers.

December: Summer Settles In – Small and Windy

December closes the year with average swell of 2.3m and period 11.3s, and the ideal wind percentage stuck at 7%. The SSE wind dominates (32.2%) and continues to blow hard, with 21.8% of readings exceeding 30kph. Swell is mostly from SW (27.0%) and SSW (15.6%), with only a tiny fraction from the more favorable WSW (7.4%) and W (1.1%). The result is small, wind-affected waves for most of the month. The Hoek turns into a choppy mess, with wave heights rarely exceeding 1.5m under the prevailing wind. On the plus side, the water is warm, and beginners will love the 0.5-1m fun-sized waves that occasionally roll through on a dialled dawn ESE breeze. But for serious surfers, December is a time to travel or enjoy the rare glassy morning that delivers a clean, rippable waist-high wave. It's the low point of the year, but the ocean always has a suprise — a late-season southerly swell can still produce a few good sets if you're willing to wait.
