Best Surf Season (October - March)

The Wedge truly comes alive during the late fall and winter months, when the combination of powerful long-period groundswells and reliable offshore winds aligns most frequently. From October through March, the average wave period climbs above 12 seconds, often reaching into the 13-14 second range, signaling the arrival of distant storm systems from the North Pacific and Southern Hemisphere. While the dominant swell direction during this period is from the W and WSW — not ideal for this SSW-facing beach — a significant percentage of swell also arrives from the SSW and SW, which are exactly the directions that light up the wedge’s unique refraction zone. The real magic, however, is in the wind: northerly quadrants (N, NNE, NE, NNW) blow offshore over 40% of the time in December, January, and November, creating clean, glassy conditions that peel the waves into the iconic, hollow wedges. When a strong low-pressure system stalls off the California coast and sends a 15-19 second SW pulse, the reef geometry cranks out stand-up barrels that demand respect. This is the prime window for those who chase the heaviest waves.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September serve as transitional months where the surf is more inconsistent, but the potential for quality remains. In April, the average swell height ticks up to 1.0m with a solid 13.4s period, and the majority of swell energy shifts slightly more southward — SSW and SW combined account for over 34% of the total. However, the offshore wind window shrinks considerably, with ideal wind percentages dropping to just 16% in April. This means you’ll have to be selective, picking the days when a cold front passes and the wind swings north for a few hours. Similarly, September sees a modest recovery in wind quality (15% ideal) after the summer doldrums, and the first hints of Southern Hemisphere swell start to mix with early fall tropical activity. The wave heights remain small on average (0.8m), but a +5-day period from a hurricane tracking well south can inject a few days of fun, rippable waves into the mix.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

From May through August, The Wedge enters its low-energy phase, where persistent onshore flow dominates and wave heights rarely exceed the fun-sized category. The average sea breeze regime sets up with winds blowing consistently from the SW, WSW, and W — all bad wind directions for this spot. Ideal wind percentages drop to a mere 4-8%, meaning that even when swell arrives, it’s often accompanied by bumpy, choppy surfaces that ruin the wave shape. The swell direction during these months is heavily concentrated in the SSW and SW quadrants (over 70% combined in June and July), which is actually optimal for wave generation at The Wedge, but the lack of any meaningful period (still around 13-14s) combined with small average heights (0.8-0.9m) means the waves are mostly small and crumbly. A rare exception comes when a strong tropical cyclone passes well to the south, but even then, the onshore wind usually ruins the party. For most surfers, these months are best spent elsewhere or on a longboard when the occasional small, clean morning window appears.

November: Building Toward Prime Season

November continues the positive trend, with an average wave height of 0.8m and a period of 12.8s. While the average height remains similar to previous months, the distribution of swell directions shows a slight shift: W swell increases to 26.4%, WSW to 36.4%, and SW to 26.2%. The SSW component drops to 9.4%, but the combination of SW and SSW still amounts to over 35% of optimal directions. The most impressive change is in the wind: ideal conditions occur 41% of the time, with strong contributions from N (5.0%), NNE (6.5%), and NE (5.5%) – all offshore. The wind rose also shows a healthy presence of NW (8.1%) and NNW (5.2%), further helping wave quality. The swell period is still long enough to produce solid, rideable waves, and the increasing frequency of winter storm systems ensures a more consistent supply of swell. November is a prime month for dedicated surfers who want to get a jump on the peak winter season. The combination of clean offshore winds and SW groundswell can produce excellent, barreling waves.
