Best Surf Season (December – March)

The heart of the Northeast Monsoon delivers the most consistent recipe for perfection at Tiger Stripes. From December through March, the trade winds set up a reliable offshore flow from the N to NW quadrant, keeping the SSE-facing reef glassy for extended periods. Meanwhile, long-period groundswells generated by distant mid-latitude storms in the Indian Ocean pour in from the SSE and S, producing clean, powerful lines in the 1–1.5m range. February and March are the absolute sweet spot, with average periods climbing above 10 seconds and swell direction locking into the optimal SE–S window. This is when the wave quality is at its peak – punchy, hollow, and rippable on the sets.

Fair Surf Season (April & November)

April and November sit in the transition zones between monsoons, offering a mixed bag. In April, the tail end of the Northeast Monsoon still brings occasional offshore windows, but the trades become more variable, and the wind often swings into the onshore WSW–W quadrant. Swell heights hold up around 1.3–1.5m, and the period remains long (10–11s), so when the wind cooperates, the waves are solid and powerful. November sees the return of offshore tendencies as the Northeast Monsoon begins to reassert itself, but lingering westerly winds can spoil the fun. Still, the average period climbs back toward 10s, and the swell direction shifts from S/SSW to more favorable SE/SSE, setting the stage for a good session when the synoptic pattern aligns.

Low Surf Season (May – October)

From May through October, the Southwest Monsoon dominates, bringing relentless onshore winds from the SW, WSW, and W that turn Tiger Stripes into a choppy, wind-affected mess. Despite the wind, this period actually sees the largest swell of the year – average heights reach 1.5–1.8m with periods consistently above 10.5s – thanks to strong low-pressure systems brewing in the Southern Ocean. However, the onshore flow decimates wave quality: most days are lumpy, with strong cross-shore chop and a poor surface texture. The sweet spot within this low season is September and October, when the wind percentage is slightly higher (29% ideal), and occasional breaks in the monsoon can produce short-lived windows of clean, powerful surf. Expect to work for your waves, and keep an eye on the forecast for those rare westerly wind shifts.

April: Transitional Swell, Fickle Winds

April sees a dramatic shift in the synoptic pattern. Swell is still excellent, with 73% of waves from the SSE and S, and periods averaging 10.9s – the longest of the year. Heights push 1.3m, giving solid, powerful surf. However, the Northeast Monsoon collapses, and the wind becomes fickle: westerly and southwesterly flow invades, with W (24%), WSW (20%), and WNW (16%) making up the bulk. Only 47% of the time is ideal, as the onshore WSW wind often ruins the surface. The quality drops quickly when the wind swings onshore, so you need to pick your windows carefully – early mornings or days with a strong high-pressure ridge can still produce glassy conditions.
