Best Surf Season (May - August)

Winter roars to life along the New South Wales coast as a relentless conveyor belt of low-pressure systems spins up in the Southern Ocean. This is prime time for Two Mile/Easter Reef. The average swell height climbs to a solid 2.8-3.1m with long-period energy averaging 12.8-13.0s, delivering powerful SW to SSW groundswells that wrap beautifully into the south-facing beach. Simultaneously, the frequency of offshore winds from the N and NW quadrants peaks at 45-46% during May and June, cleaning up the face and creating hollow, rippable peaks. July and August squeeze out a few more XL days, though occasional strong westerly changes can add some chop. Still, this is the window for consistent, firing surf.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

Shoulder seasons bring a mix of quality and variability. In March and April, the ocean still holds considerable winter momentum: average swell heights remain around 2.6-2.7m with 12.3-12.7s periods, and ideal wind conditions improve to 27-38%. The swell direction shifts slightly more WSW and W as the storm track wavers, but the south-facing break still picks up plenty of juice. September and October see a gradual transition toward spring; swell heights dip slightly to 2.8-3.1m in September (still solid), but offshore wind percentages drop to 38% and 32% respectively as northerly winds become more sporadic. Northern quadrant winds still deliver clean sessions, especially when strong high-pressure systems settle over the Tasman Sea.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer is the quietest period for Two Mile/Easter Reef. The subtropical ridge shifts poleward, weakening the Southern Ocean storm machine and bringing smaller average swells of 2.4-2.5m with periods around 11.6-11.9s. These are mostly shorter-period S to SW windswells that lack the punch of winter groundswells. Onshore winds from the S, SE, and E dominate 30-40% of the time, blowing directly into the south-facing beach and ruining the shape. Offshore north to northwesterlies only blow 22-26% of the time, making quality sessions a rare treat. If a strong cold front sneaks through or a tropical depression drifts south, there can be fleeting moments of glory – but generally, it's a season of groveling in small, choppy conditions.

August: Winter Holds Strong – Slightly Smaller, Still Potent

August is still deep winter with an average swell of 3.1m and 13.0s period – tied for the largest height of the year. Swell direction shifts even more west: WSW (12.5%), SW (10.2%), and W (4.8%) remain dominant, with WNW (1.9%) still present. Offshore wind frequency drops a tad to 43%, but N/NNW winds still blow over 24%. The ocean is still very active; the swell might be slightly more west than SW, which can wrap a bit differently, but Two Mile handles it well. Expect powerful, long-period waves in the 2-2.5m range, with occasional 3m+ sets. Late August often sees the first signs of spring as the westerly wind belt strengthens, but for now, the surf remains pumping. It’s a fantastic month for experienced surfers seeking empty, heavy waves.
