Best Surf Season (May - August)

Winter along the KwaZulu-Natal coast delivers the most consistent surf at Umdloti. The sub-tropical high pressure belt shifts north, allowing a parade of cold fronts to sweep across the region. These systems generate long-period S to SE groundswells that wrap nicely around the ESE-facing beach. Critically, the pre-frontal NW winds and post-frontal SW-W winds provide a high percentage of offshore conditions. The result is clean, powerful waves with average periods pushing 10-11 seconds and heights consistently in the fun to pumping range. Over 50% of the time the wind is favourable, making this the prime window for serious sessions.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

The transition months bring a mix of summer and winter patterns. April still sees some lingering NE onshore breezes, but the SE swell quality improves as the first cold fronts of the season arrive. Wind becomes ideal nearly 40% of the time, with increasing periods and clean conditions on the better days. September mirrors April as the winter pattern retreats. Swell heights remain solid around 1.8m, but the frequency of offshore winds drops to 34% and the period slips a bit. Still, plenty of rideable days with punchy sets.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

Summer brings tropical heat and the dominance of the Indian Ocean subtropical high. The prevailing NE-ENE winds blow directly onshore, ruining wave quality more than 75% of the time. Swell is largely short-period windswell from the E and ESE, generated by the same onshore flow. Occasional S or SE groundswell pulses break the monotony, but they rarely align with offshore NW or WSW winds. The average period dips to 9 seconds or less, and heights hover around 1.6m – fun-sized at best, but often messy. This is the quiet season when you have to work hard to score a clean runner.

December: Holiday Flat Spell

December is the most challenging month for surf quality at Umdloti. The average swell height drops to 1.6m and the period hits a yearly low of 8.7s – mostly windswell. Swell comes predominantly from E (18.6%), SE (16.7%), and SSE (20.2%) with some S (15.7%) swell still in the mix. Wind is ideal only 18% of the time, the lowest of the year. NE (18.8%) and ENE (14.7%) winds blow relentlessly, generating messy, choppy conditions. The rare offshore day occurs when a strong cold front passes, bringing NW winds and a brief pulse of longer-period S swell. But these windows are few and far between. Most days are small and onshore – better for swimming than surfing. Patience and a good pair of fins are your friends.
