Best Surf Season (April - September)

The heart of the surf year at Vairao is driven by the powerful Southern Ocean. From April through September, average swell heights climb to a solid 2.1-2.3m, with wave periods consistently in the 12-13s range. The dominant swell directions are S, SSE, and SE, which, while not directly hitting this west-facing beach, wrap around the island with impressive energy, delivering long, lined-up waves. The trade winds from the east and southeast blow offshore (ideal for the west coast), but the wind is at its strongest and most variable during these months—ideal wind percentages dip to 26-42%. Still, when the trades ease, you can score pumping, glassy conditions with those long-period south swells. This is the prime window for size and power.

Fair Surf Season (October - March)

As spring transitions into the austral summer, the swell engine shifts. From October to March, average heights drop to 1.7-2.0m, but the mix of swell directions becomes slightly more favorable. Though still dominated by southern quadrants, there is an uptick in SW to WNW swell energy (especially from December to February), which hits Vairao more directly. The trade winds remain mostly from the E/ESE—perfectly offshore—and the wind is more consistent and often lighter, with ideal wind percentages ranging 33-42%. The waves may be smaller, but the combination of cleaner conditions and more direct swell angles makes for fun, rippable waves that are far less demanding than the winter giants. This is the season for loggers, fish, and higher-performance surfing.

Low Surf Season (None)

Vairao enjoys year-round surf. Even the weakest months (like January or December) see average swell heights over 1.5m and periods above 11s, thanks to the ever-present Southern Hemisphere swell train. There is no true low season, but the most challenging period for consistency is arguably June through August when the trades are strongest and gusts can ruin the surface. However, with the right storm track and a window of light winds, each season offers its own reward.

July: Deep Winter, Heavy & Huge

July maintains the winter intensity: 2.3m average height, 12.3s period. Southern swells (S 21.4%, SSE 15.9%, SSW 15.9%) continue to roll in. Wind patterns are the most challenging of the year: ideal wind is only 26%, with strong ESE trades (24.7%) and occasional NW winds (2.3%) that can blow onshore. Despite this, when the wind cooperates and the swell angle is right (slightly south), Vairao can produce incredibly long, powerful walls. Wave heights often exceed 2.5m, making this a month for experts only. Conditions are raw, but the rewards are epic.
