Best Surf Season (October - April)

October through April marks the prime window for Varkala, when the winter monsoon settles in and the Indian Ocean delivers a steady diet of long-period groundswell. With the northeast trade winds firmly established, offshore winds from the NNE to E quadrant blow clean and light across the SW-facing cliffs. Average wave heights hover in the fun-sized 0.5–1.0m range, but the 10–11s periods ensure punchy, rideable waves. November stands out as the peak month, boasting 56% ideal wind conditions and a mix of S/SSW swell that wraps nicely into the bay. March and April bring a slight uptick in size (0.7–0.8m) while maintaining nearly 50% offshore wind frequency. The consistency is not as high as tropical reef breaks further east, but when the right swell aligns with a clear morning offshore, Varkala offers rippable walls and long walls perfect for log to shortboard sessions.

Fair Surf Season (May & September)

May and September serve as transitional periods, teetering between the mild NE monsoon and the aggressive SW monsoon. In May, the average swell height climbs to 1.0m as the first signs of the Indian summer monsoon appear, but the ideal wind frequency drops to 33%. Swell from the SW and W starts to dominate, bringing more power but also increased onshore winds from the same direction. September sees the SW monsoon retreating, with swell still pumping at 1.2m average and ideal wind at 36%. During these months, patience is key: you need to pick your windows when a passing ridge or a brief break in the trades allows offshore flow (NNE to E) to groom the waves. When it comes together, you can find head-high, lined-up walls, but the consistency is lower and sessions often require checking multiple times of day.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

The southwest monsoon roars into full effect from June through August, transforming Varkala into a churning cauldron of windswell. Average wave heights reach 1.4–1.6m, and periods remain in the 10–11s range, but the wind is predominantly from the NW, W, and SW — onshore and sideshore directions that chop up the surf. Ideal offshore wind plummets to 20–34% (worst in June at 20%). The swell direction shifts heavily to WSW and W, which, while in the optimal window for the break, arrives with a strong onshore component that makes for racy, 1–1.5m waves that are often blown-out and difficult to read. A few sandbanks can offer shelter in the northern corners of the bay, but generally, this is best left to experienced locals or those looking for a rugged, windsurf-like session. The ocean is still alive, but for a quality surfing experience, it's best to plan around this three-month low.

April: Transitioning to Size

April is a transitional month that still holds on to excellent wind statistics (46% ideal) while the swell size begins to climb. Average swell height reaches 0.8m with a very long period of 11.7s — the highest period of the year, indicating that storms in the Southern Ocean are starting to send groundswell into the Indian Ocean. Swell direction is overwhelmingly from the S (43.1%) and SSW (34.4%), with a small but increasing amount of SW (12.5%) and WSW (6.1%) energy. Wave heights are mostly in the 0.5–1m range, but a few 1–1.5m waves appear (2.8% from S/SSW/SW). Wind ideal remains high due to frequent N winds (12.6%) and NNW (15.8%) — note that NNW is not strictly offshore (it's side-offshore), but it still grooms the waves reasonably well. The onshore influence from WSW (5.8%), W (8.8%), and WNW (13.3%) is building but not yet dominant. April can surprise with a fun, clean day where head-high sets roll in with high period and little wind. It's the last month of the prime season before the monsoon truly unsettles the pattern.
