Best Surf Season (October - March)

Verdicio roars to life during the autumn and winter months as the North Atlantic shifts into high gear. From October through March, a climatological uptick in powerful extratropical cyclones sends consistent, long-period swell marching toward the Cantabrian coast. The average wave height sits between 1.3m and 1.7m, with periods regularly hitting the 11-13 second range – that's solid, powerful surf that wraps into the bay with authority. Offshore wind blows from the S/SW quadrant over 30% of the time, groomin’ the NW and NNW groundswell into clean, rippable walls. This is when Verdicio truly lives up to its reputation as a premier Spanish sandbar beach break.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September are transition months, straddling the line between winter’s energy and summer’s lull. In April, average swell drops to 1.3m with periods around 10.7s – still rideable, but the punch is a bit softer. Ideal wind ticks down to 24%, so you’ll need to pick your moments. September sees the ocean waking back up: 1.1m at 10.2s average, with ideal wind up to 28%. You’ll score fun, peelable waves, especially when a rogue northwesterly groundswell aligns with a southerly breeze. These months aren’t red-hot, but they offer some of the best solitude and combo swells of the year.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer at Verdicio is a sleepy affair. From May through August, the Azores High dominates, squashing storm activity and reducing average swell heights to the 0.8m-1.0m range. Wave periods hover around 8.7-9.8 seconds – short-period, windswell-driven slop. The wind story doesn’t help either: ideal offshore days drop to just 21-23% of the time, with onshore northerly and northwesterly winds frequently ruining the shape. That said, early-morning glass-offs or rare southern wind events can still produce grovelable, fun-sized waves for those willing to work for it. But honestly, this is a great time to explore something else – or chase a summer south swell.

May: Small and Grovelly

May is when summer starts to settle in. Average swell height drops to just 1.0m, with a period of 9.8s – squarely in the ‘small, fun-sized, groveling’ category. NW swell still dominates at 42.8%, but most of it is under 1.5m. The wind is ideal only 23% of the time, with the E (15.7%) and ENE (16.4%) providing the bulk of offshore flow. Unfortunately, a notable increase in NW and NNW winds (7.8% and 4.5%) means onshore conditions are more common. The waves are weak, often crumbly, and require a longboard or large twin-fin to have fun. Look for early mornings or late-evening glass-offs, or hope for a late-season storm to push a waist-high+ WNW swell your way.
