Best Surf Season (May - August)

During the heart of the South African winter, Victoria Bay comes alive with consistent, powerful SW-to-SSW swell and a high frequency of offshore northerly winds. Average wave heights hit 2.6m and periods stretch to 12+ seconds, delivering that long-period punch that makes the bay's iconic right-hander reel perfectly. The statistical probability of ideal wind climbs above 60% in June and July, providing clean, glassy conditions for peak performance.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

Transitional months offer a mixed bag. While the winter swell machine is ramping up or winding down, the wind patterns become less consistent. You will find a decent chance of good waves, but the percentage of ideal wind drops to around 40-43%. Swell heights remain solid at 2.3-2.6m, and with a proper synoptic setup you can score pumping, offshore-condition waves.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

Summer brings lighter winds and a higher incidence of onshore ESE and SE wind that ruins the wave quality. The dominant swell directions shift eastwards, with plenty of SE and ESE energy that is not ideal for the bay's orientation. Although the average wave height is still 2.1-2.4m, the wave period drops to 10-11 seconds, resulting in less powerful, more crumbly faces. The frequency of offshore wind plummets to between 21% and 31%, making clean surf a rare commodity. Only during strong cold fronts that slip south can we see a window of quality SW swell and light offshore flow.

September: Transition to Spring, Wind Fading

September marks the beginning of spring and a shift in wind patterns. Average swell height remains high at 2.6m, but period drops to 11.6s. Swell direction is shifting: SW (20.8%) remains strong, but SSW (16.1%) and S (7.4%) still contribute. Ideal wind falls to 41%, indicating more mixed conditions. Northerly winds decrease: N 5.0%, NNW 4.9%, NW 5.3%, WNW 7.0%. Easterly winds increase again (E 9.4%, ESE 9.0%). Onshore winds from SSW, SW, WSW total about 25.3%. This month can still produce great waves, but the window for clean conditions tightens. Look for passing cold fronts that bring temporary NW flow and solid SW swell.
