Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic flexes its muscles during these months, delivering the most powerful and consistent swell of the year. With average heights ranging from 2.3m in October to a peak of 2.8m in December, and wave periods frequently pushing into the 11-12 second range, the potential for epic surf is undeniable. However, the caveat is wind. The climatological dominance of low-pressure systems spinning off the Azores means onshore winds from the SW, SSW, and S are common, often ruining the wave quality. The magic happens when a high-pressure ridge builds in from the north, ushering in offshore N to NNW flow. Those are the days when long-period NW groundswells wrap into the bay and combine with clean conditions, offering world-class waves. This season is for the patient and the dedicated, rewarding those who read the synoptic charts.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

These transitional months offer a more balanced trade-off between size and conditions. Swell heights moderate to the 1.7-2.2m range, with periods hovering around 10-11 seconds. The storm track begins to shift north in spring, reducing the frequency of strong onshore winds, and by September the Atlantic is just waking up. As a result, the percentage of ideal wind climbs to 33-41%. You can still score solid, powerful waves, especially from north quadrant swells that wrap into the break, but the window for truly offshore conditions widens. April and May see increasing daylight and lighter winds, making them prime months for consistent, fun-sized surf without the winter crowds.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer in Vila Franca do Campo is a tale of contrasting conditions. The warm season brings the most reliable offshore winds of the year, with ideal wind percentages peaking at 65% in July. Unfortunately, swell production takes a nosedive. Average wave heights drop to just 1.2-1.4m, and periods shorten to 9 seconds or less. The dominant swell direction remains north-northwest, but the energy is simply not there. Most days you will find small, groveling waves, perfect for longboards or foamies. While the water is warm and the sun shines, the real surf action is on hold. When a rare south swell filters in, it can produce fun waist-to-shoulder-high waves, but those are few and far between. If you are chasing size, plan your trip outside these months.

May: Spring's Finest

May continues the positive trend. Swell height averages 1.8m, with a period of 10.0 seconds, providing fun, rippable waves. The dominant swell direction is still NNW (19.3%) and NW (13.4%), but there is now a larger percentage of smaller north swell. The big story is the wind. Offshore conditions jump to 40% of the time, the highest since the previous autumn. The most common wind directions are from the north quadrant (N, NNE, NE, NW), and wind speeds are generally light to moderate, rarely exceeding 30kph. The onshore flow from the south and southwest is reduced significantly. This month offers the best compromise between wave size and clean conditions. The water is starting to warm up, and the long spring days mean more daylight hours for surfing. While the swell isn't as powerful as winter, the consistency of clean conditions makes May a prime target.
