Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic winter engine fires up in October, sending consistent, long-period swells from the NW to W corridor towards the Portuguese coast. With average wave heights between 2.1m and 2.7m and periods often exceeding 12 seconds, the energy levels are pumping during these months. The Azores High and passing low-pressure systems create ideal offshore wind windows (from the E/SE quadrant) 48-55% of the time, particularly in December, January, and November. This is when Vila Praia de Ancora transforms into a firing beach break, offering powerful, rippable walls and occasional bigger days for the more experienced.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September serve as the transition months. Swell heights drop slightly (1.6-2.1m) and periods shorten (10.5-11.0s), but the ocean still delivers solid sets. Wind consistency becomes more fickle – ideal conditions occur around 37-40% of the time. A passing storm track can still produce a good, fun-sized day, but expect more mixed conditions with onshore breezes filling in. These months reward those willing to pick the windows.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer sees the North Atlantic settle into a calmer regime. Average swell heights dip to 1.4-1.7m, periods drop to 8.7-9.9s, and the dominant wind patterns shift to northerly and northwesterly flows – often onshore and choppy. Ideal offshore wind from the east/southeast occurs only 21-31% of the time, making clean conditions a rare treat. While you can still find fun-sized waves on a good day, the overall consistency and power are low. Longboard and groveler sessions dominate. July is the absolute low point, with the smallest swells and the highest percentage of onshore winds.

January: The North Atlantic Roars

January is the heart of winter, delivering the highest average swell height of the year at 2.7m with a powerful, long period of 12.9s. Swell energy is heavily concentrated in the optimal W, WNW, and NW quadrants, which together account for over 40% of the wave energy. The W and NW swells wrap nicely into the west-facing beach, providing pumping and firing conditions when the wind cooperates. Offshore wind from the E/SE quadrant blows 54% of the time – the second highest percentage of the year – meaning you can score clean, lined-up sets frequently. However, beware of strong onshore winds from the WNW and NW (less common but still present) that can quickly turn the surf into a messy chop. Overall, this is prime time for experienced surfers to charge.
