Best Surf Season (December - February)

The heart of winter delivers the most consistent combination of rideable swell and favorable offshore winds at Wabasso. As the North Atlantic storm track shifts south, we see a steady diet of NE to E swell. Average wave heights hover around 0.8-0.9m with periods typically in the 8-9 second range, offering punchy, rippable waves. More importantly, the percentage of ideal offshore flow from the SW to W quadrant peaks near 30-34%, meaning more clean sessions. While the water is chilly, these months produce the highest quality surf.

Fair Surf Season (March - May & September - November)

The transition seasons offer a mixed bag. Swell heights remain in the 0.7-1.0m range, and periods can extend to 9 seconds in fall, bringing more power. However, the reliability of offshore winds drops. In spring, the wind becomes more variable with a higher frequency of onshore E to NE breezes. Fall sees a rapid increase in swell from passing hurricanes and early winter storms, particularly in October and November, but the wind is often from the E or NE as well, limiting clean conditions. Still, when a strong cold front clears out the atmosphere, these months can produce epic sessions.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the quietest time at Wabasso. The average swell drops to a mere 0.5-0.6m with short periods around 7-8 seconds. The dominant wind pattern is from the E and SE, bringing persistent onshore flow that chops up the already small waves. Ideal offshore wind percentages plummet to 13-15%. While there may be occasional small fun-sized waves, conditions are generally small and messy. This is a good time to focus on other activities, as the surf rarely delivers quality waves.

July: Summer Lull Persists

July offers little change from June. Average swell height remains at 0.5m with a period of 8.0s. The swell direction shifts even more east, with ESE accounting for a whopping 44.7% of all swell and E another 36.6%. Almost all waves are under 0.5m or in the 0.5-1m range, confirming the lack of any meaningful energy. Ideal wind percentage stays at 13%, and onshore breezes from the S through ESE prevail. Light winds are frequent (0-10kph), but they are rarely from the offshore quadrant. The rare pulse of longer-period swell from a tropical system can light things up, but otherwise, July is a total miss. Patience is a virtue during this flat spell.
