Best Surf Season (May - August)

Winter brings the most consistent and powerful surf to Wainui Beach. The average swell height peaks at 2.1m in June and July, with periods averaging 10.8-11.0s, translating to punchy, long-period groundswells that wrap beautifully into the bay. The climatological strengthening of the Southern Ocean storm track fires up the Tasman Sea and South Pacific, sending frequent, energetic swells from the S through ESE quadrants – exactly what this east-southeast-facing beach craves. Offshore winds from the W, WNW, and NW dominate during these months, with ideal wind percentages hitting 54% in May and June, and staying high through August. This combination delivers clean, hollow peaks and long walls that are a magnet for intermediate and advanced surfers alike.

Fair Surf Season (March - April & September - October)

The shoulder months offer a mixed bag but plenty of quality sessions. March and April see average swell heights of 1.8m and periods around 10.4-10.7s – still solid but slightly less consistent than winter. The wind becomes more variable, with ideal percentages dropping to 42-49%. Lingering winter swells from the S and SSE often mix with more easterly swell, and the westerly wind regime is still reliable, especially in the mornings. September and October see average heights dip to 1.6-1.7m as the storm track weakens, but the offshore wind window remains decent (47-51%), and you can still score clean, fun waves during the cold fronts that sweep across the South Island. The key is timing: early summer weather patterns start creeping in, bringing lighter winds but also more onshore easterlies.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Summer is the least reliable time for quality surf at Wainui Beach. Average swell heights drop to 1.5-1.6m with periods around 9.6-9.9s, resulting in more inconsistent, shorter-period swell that often feels small and sluggish. The tropical Pacific and Tasman Sea become quieter, and the dominant swell directions shift northward – with a notable increase in ENE and NE swell that doesn't match the beach's optimal exposure. Offshore wind percentages hit their lowest, falling to 38-41% in January and February, as the prevailing flow becomes more onshore from the east and northeast. When the rare southerly swell coincides with a southerly buster or a west wind change, it can fire up, but those moments are few and far between. Expect largely small, wind-affected conditions – better left for a day at the beach with the family than a serious surf session.

July: Deep Winter, Heavy Swell

July is another prime winter month with average swell height at 2.1m and period 10.8s. The swell direction is similar to June, with the S (15.8%) and SSE (12.9%) leading, but also a notable increase in SE (10.8%) and E (7.2%) components, reflecting the broader range of winter storm tracks. The wind ideal percentage dips slightly to 50%, but still excellent. The offshore quadrant (WNW, NW, NNW) accounts for over 32% of the wind, with the strongest consistency from the WNW (13.1%). The onshore S and SSW winds do blow 14% of the time, usually following cold front passages, but they lead to brief periods of unsettled conditions before the swell cleans up again. July offers the same reliability as June: consistent heavy swell, long periods, and frequent offshore flow. Expect a mix of fun, head-high days and occasional pumping, overhead beasts. The water is cold, so a good wetsuit is essential, but the reward is some of the best surf of the year.
