Best Surf Season (April - September)

The austral autumn and winter months bring the most consistent blend of quality swell and favourable offshore winds to Waitpinga. As the Southern Ocean storm track intensifies, we see a marked increase in long-period S and SSW swell averaging 11-12 seconds, with heights consistently in the 1-1.5m and 1.5-2m range. The percentage of ideal north quadrant winds (offshore at Waitpinga) peaks during these months, often exceeding 30% in May and June. This combination produces clean, powerful lines that peel down the beach — prime conditions for those seeking hollow walls and long rides.

Fair Surf Season (March & October)

March and October act as transition months. The swell clock ticks over from one regime to the next, offering a mix of winter-grade power and summer-like consistency. Wave periods hold around 11-12 seconds, and the swell direction remains predominantly SSW and SW. While the ideal wind frequency dips to 18-20%, there are still plenty of windows with light north or northwest winds that groom the surface. These months can deliver surprisingly good sessions, especially when a high-pressure system stalls over the continent.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

The height of the austral summer sees the lowest frequency of offshore winds at Waitpinga. From November through February, ideal wind conditions occur only 13-15% of the time, with the prevailing sea breeze from the SE and SSE dominating. This onshore cross-shore wind chops up the surface, making the waves less appealing. The swell remains present — predominantly from S, SSW, and SW — with average heights around 1.4m, but the shorter average periods (10.7-11.1s) and frequent onshore flow mean the quality is often compromised. Swell is robust: predominantly SSW (45%) and SW (33%), with average period 12.1s and height 1.3m. The combination of strong, long-period groundswell and reliable offshore winds produces some of the best surf of the year — clean, powerful, and rippable.
